The C&O Car Ferry Service in Milwaukee The Badger (built 1951) is still in service—to transport people and automobiles; currently it makes runs across Lake Michigan between Manitowoc, Wisconsin, and Ludington, Michigan. When I saw it back in the late-1970s, it was sailing from Milwaukee on the Wisconsin side, where these two pictures were taken. In the first image, Chesapeake & Ohio EMD SW9 number 5091 (built in 1953) looks on near the C&O ticket office as the car ferry Badger prepares to steam across Lake Michigan. In the second image the Badger has just been loaded and preparing to sail.

I believe railroad car service was in operation from 1953 to 1983. After a hiatus and uncertain future, it was rededicated (in 1992) in as a non-railroad car ferry. Images by Richard Koenig; taken in the late 1970s.

1927 Badger The Badger Four Wheel Drive Truck Company, founded in 1909 in Clintonville, Wisconsin and eventually renamed the FWD Corporation, was the pioneer of heavy-duty, four-wheel drive trucks. FWDs were high-quality rigs, renowned for their ruggedness and off-road ability. On this 1927 open-cab model with tilt dump body, the transfer case and front and rear driveshafts are in clear view. The Badger Arrives

The former car ferry for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad, now a tourist operation for the most part, arrives Ludington, Michigan. It now carries people and their automobiles across the lake between this place and Manitowoc, Wisconsin. The structure in the foreground is the Ludington North Breakwater Light.

[I should note: the railroad had a sister ship to this one named the Spartan. Thus one for a Wisconsin State University and one for one situated Michigan. I doubt that this would happen in contemporary times with the attack on higher education going on.]

This was very much one of these events where things unfold every so slowly, lulling one into a complacency...only to then accelerate very quickly. This so much as to catch a photographer with their pants down, but I think I was able to squeeze off the frames that I wanted. This daily summer event deserves more attention—and perhaps booking passage; one can go here if interested.

One thing that mildly disconcerts me regarding these shots: the lighthouse seen here has a definite tilt toward open water. [Whenever possible, I level my images based on the horizon, easily done here with Lake Michigan in the background, and the tilt is real.] I don't know if it was designed that way, to withstand pounding of large waves from that direction, or something that's happened over time.

I'm half-assing @knusperlaf's Fan Art February Faves art challenge on Instagram!

The prompt for February 2 was "hero". This is Mike Baron's "Badger", my favorite comic book hero in high school. Drawn without reference, so I think I messed up his logo! I used to be able to draw it without even thinking. I once Sharpied it on a tank top. Those were different times. I wouldn't even own a tank top today!
