Moves is an Asheville NC band that sort of defies easy genre identification, but they embody all sorts of elements of pop, rock, and maybe even touches of folk in a big Americana package that is super easy to mellow out to. I hear elements of Oh No, Oh My!, Houndmouth, Lake Street Dive, and bold take-no-prisoners Florence and the Machine -esque vocals from Dulci Ellenberger on songs like “Same Thing”. They previously went by Holy Ghost Tent Revival and after some natural evolution in the band’s style and roster, they’re now playing all over the country as MOVES. This is one of those albums that took me a few listens to really get inside of, not because it isn’t outstanding music, but because it’s so deceptively complex if you take the time to really pay attention to the musicianship, the nuance songwriting approach, and way that one album can deftly cover so many different styles of music without it sounding like an experiment. This band is clearly chock full of talented folks who have honed their crafts over time and now we get to enjoy the fruits of their labors! The @waxmagerecords pressing is unfortunately sold out (and ya’ll know how much I love them), but there are still some copies of the clear beer pressing left.
