The title of the article is (slightly) misleading. Marriage (zakonska zveza) is still exclusively heterosexual, as is life partnership (zunajzakonska zveza), but a new institution for same-sex couples has been introduced, a sort of civil union (partnerska zveza), together with life partnership for same-sex couples (nesklenjena partnerska zveza). The 4 aforementioned institutions are all the same in effect, except when it comes to joint adoption and in vitro fertilisation, which remain available only to heterosexual couples.
The new law that comes into effect today is basically the same as the one the government wanted to introduce already in 2014, but then the better and actually equal marriage law proposal came from the opposition party United Left, which then spurred strong opposition in the form of the “Our Children Are At Stake” movement, supported by the other opposition parties (that already opposed the government’s bill) and the Catholic Church and subsequently the refernedum happened. However, after the negative vote, it was judged that the opposition was mainly directed towards the adoption and assisted conception rights, so the new/old bill that made same-sex partnerships equal to marriage in all respects except those could be (re)introduced.
Even if it’s not (yet) equal marriage, it is still an important step forward, though! And thanks :)
