"You don’t have to be anyone’s hero."

Lin glanced up at her mother, surprised she had even come to talk to her after their “discussion” earlier. A rather heated, loud argument at that, and certainly no way for a mother and daughter to talk to each other. Her comment only flared an ember of anger in Lin’s chest, which was immediately followed by a stab of guilt.

    ❝Yeah, well–… I didn’t ASK to be anyone’s hero,❞ she mumbled, averting her gaze.

Toph gave her useless eyes a good, exaggerated roll.

“Y’know kid, when I say not to get up to anything, the reminder’s usually meant for that sister of yours. If anything, I encourage it in you.”

She turned, running fingers over the top of their sofa to find her trench. “I’d say not to do anything I wouldn’t do, but I’m saving it for when you even come close.”

She snickered. That would be the day.

“Thanks for watching her, though. I’m sorry you have to do it again. Things’ll get better after this bust, okay? At least for a little while.”

Lin rolled her eyes when her mother did - they were the same in that respect after all. She sat down opposite her mother on the sofa, huffing a little. ❝Isn’t that a double standard?❞

She posed it as a question, but she knew the answer.

Lin wondered how angry her mother would get if she REALLY knew what Lin had been up to that afternoon.

She pulled her feet under her body, curling into the armrest. ❝Don’t thank me, she ran off after twenty minutes with her ‘friends’ again. I know better now than to go running after her.❞

Lin had heard the “after the” fill-in-the-blank argument before, but didn’t say anything. She hoped it was true, just for both their sanity’s sakes. @theblind-bandit
