Creator Spotlight: The Calamity

Miri: Is there an idea or AU you want to write but haven’t been able to yet?

Calamity: All the time. Unfortunately, most of that time is slotted to non-creative tasks.

Miri: Who has been the most difficult character to write? Who has been the easiest?

Calamity: Since I focus on fanfiction centered around The Jenova Project specifically, I've been lucky to write with a smaller "required" cast. I feel like I know and "get" all these people pretty well. That being said, teenage / adult Sephiroth is actually a pretty difficult headspace for me to get into. This is a character that, in my stories, is a vessel of anger, resentment, spite and pride. He is the other side to Vincent, who is by far the easiest for me to write, a character focused on guilt and fear and self punishment. Where Vincent is "oh no, what have I done to you?!" Sephiroth is "oh no, what have you done to me?!"

Miri: Which of your works is the most memorable to you? I don’t necessarily mean favourite or best work, it could be the work that taught you the most making it or that holds a special reason in its creation. Drop a link.

Calamity: The Nightmare Begins, which covers the Jenova Project up to Sephiroth's birth. It gets into everyone's motives for participating in the project, none of which have anything to do with the ShinRa. It is a character study, some bioethics, and a sprinkling of horror. Starts off slow burn, ends in an absolute emotional frenzy. This was a super personal story, way more than I ever intended it to be. It also was really fun and challenging to try and make something solid that fit canon well out of something so vague. https://archiveofourown.org/works/8201843

Miri: Favourite party (three person team) idea when playing FFVII? They don’t have to actually work mechanically, just that you like the idea of them together as a fighting party.

Calamity: Cloud, Cid, and Vincent. I love the dynamic between Vincent and Cid.

Miri: Pantser/Emotive Writer/Gardener or Planner/Structured Writer/Architect? (Do you outline or just go with the flow?)

Calamity: I am a complete and total pantser/emotive. More than once I have had a "brilliant" idea for a scene but when sitting down to write, the characters want to do their own thing. I trust 'em.

Miri: Any remake thoughts you’d like to share?

Calamity: I hope it never comes out.

Miri: What do you do when you get stuck on a project?

Calamity: Go for a night walk while listening to music.

Miri: What’s your ideal writing environment? Background noise, indoors/outdoors, desk/couch, etc.?

Calamity: Inside, thunderstorm, ambient music. But always music. Always.

Miri: Do you do commissioned fics, requests or prompts?

Calamity: I would yeah, but nobody has ever asked.

Miri: Anything you’d like to say to the community?

Calamity: I am so amazed and humbled by the content creators in this fandom. There are so many unique voices and SO MUCH TALENT. It really is astounding. For the most part, the people behind the creations are just as supportive and amazing. It is so neat to come together over this shared love of something, and all add to this pool of passion and creatively. I feel so lucky to have met and befriended people from this community.

Miri: Recommend me a fic of yours!

Calamity: My heart is in The Nightmare Begins, but A Cold Hearted Boy seems to be more popular, though it is not finished. A Cold Hearted Boy follows Sephiroth through his childhood in the ShinRa labs, his father-son relationships with Hojo, his pseudo-romantic relationship with Aeris, and later Zack, up until THE INCIDENT. My goal in this story was to play with the idea of nature versus nurture. Sephiroth had all the genetic components to be a monster, but it was, in the end, nurture that pushed him over the edge. https://archiveofourown.org/works/9280250/chapters/21032600

I love fan fiction.  I love how different everyone is, how their writing styles are unique, how they interpret characters so differently yet leave the the distinguishing features.

Working on some fanart for @the--calamity 's one shot Four and a Half so here's a sketch

I loved the chase scene with Vincent halfway out a window. It's written very well I highly recommend reading it if you're a fan of the Veld and Vincent.

Hey, congratulations! This ask actually reminded me to put up my how-to post on the matter, so you can find that HERE, which covers the how and when.

In short, though, they need to go on Ao3 first, don’t post it anywhere else until the reveal. If you post correctly to the collection, you can do so at any time - it’s set as “unrevealed” so it will remain a mystery work until I change the status in August when everything is in.

Once the reveal is done, you can post it wherever you like! If you do a post on Tumblr about it, I’d want to know so I can reblog it. Some people prefer for me to just make a promotional post for it myself, which I can also do.

Autumn by Puscifer has been kind of ruined for me in the best possible way. I read a lot of The Nightmare Begins by TheCalamity while listening to the song. Now whenever I listen to it all the emotions I felt reading the fic for the first time stir up. :')
