Easy Japanese! is a lot like Duolinguo (which sadly doesn’t have Japanese). Good for learning nouns, numbers, simple sentences -- and also writing, if you want. I find it addictive.
Learn Japanese phrasebook is a simple app that just lets you listen to and favorite travel phrases for easy reference.
Human Japanese gives really helpful detailed info about the why and how of pronunciation and writing, but is probably more detailed than needed for quick travel phrases.
I’ve also been listening to podcasts: Survival Japanese Phrases -- very helpful! -- and JapanesePod101.

The photo translate option in Google translate is EXTREMELY helpful and I recommend downloading the Japanese dictionary for it so you can access the basics offline. But ... すみません (excuse me/I'm sorry) and わかりません (I don't understand) will help you out A LOT. Also pocket wifi was a blessing.
Thanks for the recs -- and yay! I could read those phrases and understand!! わかります :D

I miss Japanese a lot! I still remember most of these, I've just forgotten the structure for telling time. Good luck learning!!
Thank you! It seems like you just add “ji” to a number (with a few exceptions); my own questionable attempt for “it’s cat o’clock” is 猫時です(neko ji desu)

おかえりなさい!Welcome back! :) Yup, it was me. (Or maybe it was me as todayintokyo. One of us.) If we can go walkabout again, it would be great. We can celebrate your return in this detective cafe. :)
PS: Everything about cats is fully legit in Japan. Everything and anything.
[neko atsume gif]
Yay, I can pronounce that! ;) And that sounds great... I’ll definitely let you know when there are details. And yes, I remember going to cat street, and cat cafes... I know I won’t go wrong with this obsession! (Also, my parents got me a stuffed neko atsume kitty for Christmas -- Spots -- so cute!)

SOOOOO CUUUUUTE. Almost, but not quite, as cute as your cats.
NOTHING is that cute. ;)

“Bonus: hedgehog wearing Sherlock wallpaper scarf.”
omg. THIS IS SO CUTE.
People at the cafe were giving me odd looks. (And also talking about how Benedict Cumberbatch looks like an otter, at the next table over!!) It was totally worth it. :)

I intend to watch it tomorrow! I should be blocking spoilers but instead I'm just scrolling past them quick because I'm lazy
Heh, I hear you... I used to use XKit to block things, but now I’m on my phone most of the time and do the same for things I wanna avoid.

oh god too many, you know i’m getting an english lit phd. what are you thinking for ideas? where do you want to take this?
alright dr professor rachel, lay it on me man.
i’ve brainstormed through all of my different interests, and i’m thinking of focusing on female science fiction writers. it’s not something they offer at my school, and it’s right up my alley, gender and scifi! and i would actually get to cover books that aren’t written by boring old white men!!!
if you have any recommendations for scifi books written by women from like, 1818 -- 1940, i would appreciate them. all i’ve really got for that time period is mary shelley and charlotte perkins gilman.
i’m also kind of looking for older scifi comic books? because i would really like to be able to read bitch planet for this?? yeah.

Hm…Strange Creatures edited by Neil Gaiman has several short stories that I think might be to your liking!
ooooh i need some more neil gaiman in my life, i haven’t read anything by him in awhile!! thank you :)
Wait, are there books being given away? Is this a discussion of book distribution? Uhm Yes, books, yes please to the books. I would be interested in giving some of them a good home.
I would be more than happy to mail my books away to a good home, provided that shipping wouldn’t be absolutely outrageous (meaning you have to live in the US or Canada. Sorry, international friends!). I will put up a list sometime tomorrow, and you can message me if you’re interested! :)
Hi! So excited to see that you got an new URL - you're one of my favorite authors in the fandom! =D I was just wondering if you knew where I might be able to locate "An extremely underwhelming Hockey RPF list" - it was one of my favorites, but I was only half way through and now the URL doesn't work any more lol THANKS
hi! i'm super flattered to hear that and thanks for messaging me! ;D the link will still work if you just replace dumbpigeons with cathedralhearts, so if you've got any more fic posts of mine you like, you can still use the same link, just replace my old username with my new one :) but here's the updated link in case anyone else was after it as well: http://cathedralhearts.tumblr.com/post/102142052362/an-extremely-underwhelming-hockey-rpf-fic-list-by
From Academic: "--it's going to be even worse," John finished, running a hand through his hair. "Come on, Rodney--I don't even really know what a black hole is.""Of course you know what a black hole is, Rodney said automatically, frowning. "I've explained it to you a dozen times."John raised his eyebrows skeptically. "What's the plot of War and Peace? ""There's some war," Rodney said uncertainly. "And then there's some peace. It's all very Russian and tragic."
Forgive me for getting crazy sappy, but this kind of goes to the heart of why I love romances and love stories: the cosmic strangeness of our affection for one another. We say that people with similar interests get along, we say that opposites attract, we say it’s like a lightning bolt out of nowhere — we say all these things because we have no idea really what makes people click other than that we are sometimes lucky enough that we click. In this moment, in this story, it’s just a conversation that should underline how much Rodney and John should not be together in any capacity. Rodney couldn’t give two fucks about John’s life passion, and the only things John knows about black holes in this universe are the same disgusting jokes that come to my mind. But none of that matters because they still fit each other like cranky middle-aged puzzle pieces.
