re: residential schools.
thought- replied to your post: today: It sounds like you had a very emotions intensive day, I hope tomorrow offers time to recharge. <3
thanks, dear. <3 it was a heck of a day. today’s supposed to be a lot quieter, thank god.
serenadestrong replied to your post: today: This totally happened in the US too though.
yep! all of my knowledge/experience is on the canadian system, and I was responding to her comment that residential schools (specifically under that name) were canadian and consequently something she didn’t know much about. i’m realising my tags didn’t make that clear, though.
thecoggs replied to your post: today: 1) <33333 2) I am sure you know this but fyi for your American friend, this happened here too! Until 2007! (I think one or two still exist even) We just called then “Indian Boarding Schools”
1) thanks dear!
2) yikes that is later than I would’ve guessed! yeah, when i went to check dates i came across this unbelievable sentence on wikipedia: “By 2007, most of the schools had been closed down and the number of Native American children in boarding schools had declined to 9,500 largely due to Native American civil rights abolishing slavery within the campuses, while the remaining schools have a more positive reputation from the students.” like good i’m glad that by 2007 most of them were shut for reasons of slavery not being ok. *shakes head*
i had a quick poke (~10 minutes, i shouldn’t actually be doing this rn) around google scholar and unfortunately couldn’t dig up basic things like overall enrolment, death and injury rates, and who was operating which schools when on a national level in the states. but if any americans know those/want to share, then i implore you good folks to make posts about this!
