Tony stood, frozen seeming, in the middle of hallway, expression blank.“Please tell me what you’re thinking, Tony.” Steve said quietly and for a moment, he thought Tony didn’t hear him. But in the next, Tony had snapped out of his trance, looking up at Steve.“I’m thinking that… I’m thinking, um,” he paused, mouth open like he wanted to speak up, but was afraid, was holding something back.Then tears filled his eyes and Tony’s shoulders sagged, perhaps giving up on fighting at this point, cracked and broken words slipping through quivering lips.“I’m so tired, Steve. I’m so fucking tired all the time and I can’t breathe like this, I can’t…” Steve was across the hall in seconds, offering himself to Tony and Tony clung. He buried his face in Steve’s chest, trembling hands wrapping around his back and grabbing into his shirt. “Tony…what can I do?” Steve said, trying to keep his own voice steady now. Beneath him, Tony hugged tighter and Steve wrapped his arms around his shoulders, wishing he could stop his shaking. He couldn’t stand the way Tony shook in his arms, couldn’t imagine what kind of world was on his shoulders that would make it so bad. But he knew that it was big. And scary. And all he could do was maybe shoulder it with Tony, lighten the load, help him sleep easier at night.But that was it, Steve was otherwise useless and it killed him. “Tony?”“Just… Just hold me, Steve. I’m so tired.”

you know what I’d do? I’d fucking bring Rumiko back from the dead and make it horrendously painful for everyone involved. And I’d actually fucking develop Steve and Tony’s epic love story friendship.
