Black Sh*t You Need to Know but Will Not Learn in School: The Drinking Gourd
Black slaves in America knew the prominent group of seven stars that make up the constellation known to the Greeks as Ursa Major (the Great Bear), and throughout Canada and the United States as The Big Dipper, by a different name--The Drinking Gourd.
The term The Drinking Gourd was encoded into song by Underground Railroad operatives to provide fleeing slaves with instructions and a map to enable their escape. The Drinking Gourd star formation points to Polaris, the North Star, which guided these intrepid women, men, and children determined to be free to the North and freedom.
