He did this with a switchblade, you see. One day, his focus on peeling the fruit waned, and he cut rather deeply into his palm. Predictably, he screamed out in pain, saying; ‘¡La concha de Dios!' I was fluent in Spanish, but I had absolutely no inkling of an idea on what la concha really meant; I was only five years old!I kept the event to myself, until one day, I tripped and scrapped my knee. My parents helped me up, and when I inspected the damage on my knee, I cried out—’¡La concha de Dios!’ You see, the phrase translates literally into: ‘The cunt of God’. Imagine hearing a five year old girl shout that. My mother might as well have been a ghost, with how pale her countenance looked. My father demanded I tell him where I had learned such an expression. I panicked, for the last thing I wanted was to get the father in trouble and go to hell. So I blurted out my sister’s name instead. Father skinned us both alive—we couldn’t sit down for weeks afterwards. It wasn’t very funny in the moment, but years afterwards….’Stanza and I  could laugh about it.”
