Dear past me,

The thing about succulents is that too much water can kill them. It rots them from the inside and one day you look at your verdant, plump little plant and you see it starting to shrivel up. The instinct will be to water it again. The instinct will be to water it every day. But then the leaves will keep shriveling and the stems will get splotchy. And then it’ll die.

Now, the succulent you bought has four little plants. Three of them will die and you will do the kindest, best thing in trying to save the other. But it’s not gonna work. This time, you give it space. You don’t overwater it. You don’t necessarily underwater it either, but it’s hard to know. Because for months, that guy will look healthy but it will never grow. It’ll never propagate. It’ll just hang out in it’s small bronze planter, leaning over the side toward the sun. And then it’ll start drying up.

Maybe it’s still fine though, these things go through dormant periods. They shut down and just hang out and wait for better weather. Maybe it’s not still fine. Like I said, it’s hard to know. And maaaybe you poke it when you’re investigating and maybe that tears the fragile roots even though it looks no different. It’ll die fast after that. There will be no doubt. It will no longer be hard to tell.

And all of this is true of friendship. Hard to tell, overwatered, hard to tell, dormant??, hard to tell, torn roots, certain death.

Just keep that in mind.
