During the disastrous Gallipoli Campaign in 1915 hundreds of Irish soldiers died during landings near Sedd el Bahr Fortress (1659) at the mouth of the Dardanelles Strait. The famous Irish nationalist ballad The Foggy Dew mentions the affair.
