West Ham are in the market for a new central defender but there’s only one name that should be considered above the rest this summer… WHAT’S THE WORD? According to 90min, four Premier League teams have entered the race to clinch Manchester United outcast Chris Smalling, one of which are the Hammers who are keen on signing the Englishman. Recently promoted Fulham, Everton and Newcastle United are also touted with interest. It’s claimed that these teams would be willing to pay his reported £20m asking price but the player himself wants to decide which club he signs for next. Serie A duo Inter Milan and Atalanta clearly liked what they saw from the 30-year-old whilst on loan at AS Roma as they too have been mooted as admirers. FORGET DUFFY Earlier this month, the Mirror (4th August, page 46) linked the Irons with a £10m move for Brighton back-up Shane Duffy, but if Smalling is available, then he’s someone they should move on from. The 6 foot 4 centre-back has enjoyed a resurgent season in Italy – across 37 appearances, he won an average of 3.1 aerial duels, 3.9 clearances, 1.9 interceptions and a near 90% passing accuracy, via WhoScored. Moyes’ side leaked 62 goals last season – only the bottom four conceded more – so it’s no wonder that the Scotsman wants a rejig at the back. Roma boss Paulo Fonesca has been full of praise for Smalling after his success in the Italian capital, speaking to A Bola (via the Daily Mail) he said: “He’s an extraordinary guy, very intelligent. He has characteristics that I really appreciate in the centre. He’s fast, nearly unbeatable in one-on-ones. He has a great ability to read the play and anticipate. He was very important for this club. If possible, I would like him to stay. He’s a great professional and person, it’s a pleasure to have him here with us.” It’s ever so clear that Smalling has turned things around recently and don’t forget, he’s still racked up over 200 appearances in the Premier League, which is experience that could prove vital to avoiding another relegation battle. On the other hand, Duffy could only start 12 matches this season, so if he’s not getting in the Seagull’s XI, then why should he at the London Stadium? Smalling would be the smarter addition. AND in other news,David Moyes must unleash “explosive” West Ham sensation next season… The post West Ham should forget Shane Duffy and sign Chris Smalling first appeared on FootballFanCast.com. #WestHam #TheIrons #TheHammers
West Ham have been disappointing to say the least so far this campaign. The season started with so much promise – Sebastien Haller had been brought in for a club-record fee from Eintracht Frankfurt after scoring 20 goals and providing 12 assists in the previous season, whilst Declan Rice and Issa Diop stayed at the club despite plenty of interest from Manchester United in their services. Although they lost the first game of the season 5-0 to Manchester City, that was their only defeatin their opening seven matches. However, the positivity soon dwindled away, and they are now in a far from comfortable position. As it is, they are in 16th place in the Premier League table, level on points with 18th. Haller has managed just seven league goals to date, whilst Diop has failed to prevent the Hammers from becoming one of the worst defences in the top flight – they have conceded 50 goals already this season. WATCH WEST HAM UNITED VIDEOS WITH STREAMFOOTBALL.TV BELOW There is some good news for David Moyes, though. On Tuesday, Andriy Yarmolenko played 90 minutes for the Irons’ U23 squad, against Derby County. The Ukraine international has struggled with injuries so far this campaign – he has missed 11 fixtures due to a muscle tear – but he now looks as though he is ready to return to first-team football in the near future. In the nine starts he has managed in the Premier League when he has been fit, he has impressed, scoring three goals and providing one assist as well. Although he has managed just 0.4 successful dribbles per game, that has worked out at a success rate of 67%, which is not to be sniffed at. At his best, the right-winger can terrorise opposition defences – in the Europa League in 2014/15, for example, he managed four goals and seven assists for Dynamo Kiev, whilst he has 37 goals in 86 caps for his country. Even this term, his strikes have been important – he scored the first goal in the 2-0 win against Manchester United, whilst the £115k-a-week wide man also bagged the opener in the 2-2 draw against Bournemouth. So far, Moyes has not been able to put the 30-year-old to good use, but he will soon have that chance. With the Premier League to be suspended until April 3rd because of COVID-19, this should give Yarmolenko even more time to prepare for the physicality of the top flight. Moyes needs something to save his campaign – the former Borussia Dortmund man’s return could very well be it. Meanwhile, West Ham must avoid a Glen Johnson situation with this man. #WestHam #AndriyYarmolenko #TheHammers
Club legend John Moncur joined the We Are West Ham Podcast and discussed David Moyes’ management of the Hammers’ new star, Jarrod Bowen, and the player’s abilities. Bowen hasn’t really been at the club for too long just yet but he’s already showing clear signs of why the east London outfit have moved in for him in the first place. Moncur firmly believes that the 23-year-old former Hull City star is a very direct player and one that is really tidy on the ball, which is a great sign and a big addition to the team. Here’s what he said for the We Are West Ham Podcast (11/3/2020): “I think David managed him well without a doubt. He’s a very direct good player and his goal record at that level is superb. But that composure as well he’s got in front of goal, I mean. He’s tidy on the ball, he gets his head up, but he’s a very direct player.” Of course, we are yet to see Bowen fully shine for West Ham since he’s only played a total of four games since his arrival to the club in the January transfer window but he already has one strike under his belt. We also know that he’s quite capable in front of goal too because he managed to score 54 goals and assist a further 14 across 131 games played for Hull City. West Ham have got themselves a true gem but now they have to develop him properly. West Ham fans, what are your first impressions of the new signing? Do you agree with Moncur’s verdict? So far this transfer window, David Moyes has added just one player to his West Ham squad, with Darren Randolph returning to the club from Middlesbrough. With less than a week of the transfer window left, the Scot will need to move quickly if he wants to boost his side as he looks to steer them away from the Premier League relegation battle. Plenty of names are flying about as potentially making the move to the London Stadium, one of which is Seko Fofana. CALL YOURSELF A WEST HAM EXPERT? HOW MUCH DID EACH OF THESE JANUARY SIGNINGS COST? According to Gianluca di Marzio, the Hammers are interested in taking him to the Premier League, with his current club Udinese rating him at over €20m (£16.9m). Fofana is enjoying a good season so far, especially in central midfield. Despite his side lying in 14th place in the table, the 24-year-old has one goal and four assists in nine matches in the middle of the park. Offensively, he has been a big contributor to the Italian side, with 1.7 shots, 1.2 key passes and 2.3 dribbles per match in Serie A. So far this season Mark Noble and Declan Rice have the most appearances at central midfield for West Ham. With Rice as the more defensive of the two – he has three tackles and two interceptions per match – it is up to the former to provide a bit more going forward. He has four goals and one assist in the Premier League, but three of those have been penalties – with 0.6 key passes and 0.8 dribbles per match, his offensive influence has noticeably dwindled since the 2015/16 season, when he scored seven goals and averaged 1.4 key passes per match. WATCH WEST HAM UNITED VIDEOS WITH STREAMFOOTBALL.TV BELOW The club captain is already 32, and he will turn 33 in May of this year. His time as a regular with the Irons is surely coming to an end, no matter how much of a club legend he is, even if he will likely remain a crucial member of the squad. To move forward, Moyes is in need of some extra impetus and a real driving force in the middle of the park. Fofana has all the credentials to be that man – and what better way to ensure a seamless transition process than having both vying for the same position in the starting XI. In other news, West Ham may give this man a second chance in the Premier League. #WestHam #TheHammers #MarkNoble
