After the 1986 African-American Shana, Asian-American Aja, Jem’s Hispanic boyfriend Rio, Raya Jem’s new Hispanic drummer in 1987, the 1988 Regine was to be Jem’s new mulatto (mixed ethnicity) friend and would have been the first in representation in a doll line. Fitting that her introduction landed in the middle of Black History Month.
