For the third year, Hasbro was trying to make the line more inclusive. After the 1986 African-American Shana, Asian-American Aja, Jem’s Hispanic boyfriend Rio, Raya Jem’s new Hispanic drummer in 1987, the 1988 Regine was to be Jem’s new mulatto (mixed ethnicity) friend and would have been the first in representation in a doll line. Fitting that her introduction landed in the middle of Black History Month. A lot of ppl trash Mattel fr various reasons. I get it - the quality and ideation has lately been less than. Collector Barbie is almost non-existent.

But as much as I love me some Integrity Toys, I go back to Barbie often not just because she's the OG fashion doll but because:

1) There are Barbies for every budget. You don't need to sell a kidney to afford a couple.

2) Barbies are widely available in most countries, stores. You don't have to join clubs, stay up at all hours, bang on dealer doors, 'make friends' with dealers, pay hundreds in shipping and customs, or win lotteries. You can go to a store and buy a doll. Simple.

3) Barbies are tough. I haven't had a Barbie crack even after years of playing. I've had Momokos, IT dolls, and others crack in less than 5 yrs before. Not always, but it has happened.

4) There is enough supply for demand. I get that some ppl like dolls to be 'limited'. I am not one of those people. I love dolls for being dolls. I am a doll collector not a doll flipper. So I don't appreciate manufacturers knowingly manipulating desirability but purposely creating a lot less dolls than they know there is demand for... it feels icky to me. My POV.

It boils down to dolls being fun for me. And a lot of the things going on nowadays is keeping it from being fun for me. Time to reconsider Barbie - because she's there for you.
