Hello Defiant began very differently. The original story had Scout escaping a virtual reality used for people in stasis aboard a spaceship only to find the AI of the ship had gone insane. But that was too big a jump into horror and I wanted something more emotional. For me Hello Defiant is the part of the Jungle Book when Mowgli joins civilization. This was my third attempt at finding a right style for the second edition cover of THE HOUND OF ENDTOWN. Again I used a gas mask to symbolize the post-apocalyptic setting of the story. When I shared it, my mother told me that the dog was too big and strong and that he didn’t match the smallness of Scout in the story. I really liked this design so I didn’t quickly change my mind. SWIPE ➡️ My first attempt at making a new cover for the second edition of THE HOUND OF ENDTOWN was this charcoal depiction of a lone dog and the backdrop of a ruined city. While the cause of the apocalypse isn’t specific in the book, I used the gas mask to symbolize the the end of the world. I’d go on to make a few more these, slowly reimagining the dog, his pose, and the design of the mask.
