@ the last anon i think the difference is that it’s not alec’s fault he’s gay. he doesn’t like girls. that’s not something he can do anything about. if he was straight and left lydia for another girl it would be a dick move bc just break up for her before hand. but he didn’t think he would ever be able to come out, so he was marrying a woman. just my two cents lol

The thing, to me, is that it doesn’t matter what Alec’s sexual orientation is when it comes to him breaking his political and strictly arranged marriage to Lydia because he loves someone else. Alec and Lydia have a political understanding. They are both sacrificing future romantic happiness by marrying each other in the name of gaining a professional advantage. Therefore, if either one of them retreats and decides they are not willing to sacrifice that future, the other has no right to complain. It’s a contract and either one of the parts has the right to retreat before it’s been signed. Simple as that.

However, it is objectively braver to come out in a homophobic society than it is to quietly accept that one’s plan to gain power has fallen through. That is why it doesn’t make sense to treat Lydia being okay with Alec calling off the wedding as a heroic thing. It was mature of her not to throw a fit, but it was not kind or brave. It was just okay. Just as it would be if it was the other way around and Lydia was calling off the wedding to be with a male love interest of her own and Alec was like “k be happy”.

i have this headcanon that one day alec gets SERIOUSLY hurt and basically he's gonna die so magnus just uses whatever spells he knows to try and save him and he thinks it doesn't work because nothing is changing and then for a few days they just assume the worst and suddenly one day alec gets up and they are like uh r u ok and he's like kinda but i almost died lol and no one really suspects anything until a few years later when everyone is aging except him and magnus is like o shit ya oops
