Freshly Squeezed: Hip Hop Artist Vince Staples
In the second installment of Freshly Squeezed, we take a trip across the nation to the mecca of Hip Hop: The West Coast. Right next to Compton, CA, home of Snoop Dr. Dre and Kendrick Lamar, is the city of Long Beach. Here, amidst the strong underground hip hop presence of Crooked I and historical influence of hip hop legends Snoop Dogg and Warren G, resides up & coming hip hop artist Vince Staples.
Vince Staples, 20, is a young rapper from Long Beach, CA. His most recent mixtape, Stolen Youth LP, really stood out to me last year. The most impressive fact about the project is that it was Mac Miller's first production project for another artist; the mixtape was a solid work of art that captured dope features from Ab-Soul, Joey Fatts, Mac Miller, Schoolboy Q and Da$h. Vince is mostly know for his collaborations with Earl Sweatshirt & Mike G from Odd Future, as well as Joey Fatts. Vince, along with Joey Fatts & A$ton Matthews, form the rap group Cutthroat Boyz.
Staples has a style that is similar to that of Earl Sweatshirt; part of this can be related to his early affiliation with the group after being kicked out of his home and crashed with Odd Future producer Syd Da Kid. His rapping style sounds like a man who has seen so much in his lifetime that he lacks emotion. He reminds of me of the mellow flow of Spitta with a dark side; Vince also brings about an aggressive lyrical presence with his words that enhances the overall appeal of his flow. Staples is currently working on his fourth mixtape, Shyne Coldchain Vol. 2. After hearing Stolen Youth EP, I can't wait to hear what he comes out with next.
