Another bullshit social mixer thrown by the University. 

Truth be told, it wasn’t bullshit. In fact, a lot of people had fun at these types of things. Why couldn’t he?

“Fuck,” he spat beneath his breath. Hands in fist with the hopes to alleviate his sweaty palms. The only reason he’d shown up to this thing in the first place was because She asked if he would be there. She: the gorgeous specimen from his Intro to Biology course–the only requirement course that wasn’t complete torture if only because it was an hour and a half, every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, that he was able to look at her. 

U gonna be at the mixer 2nite? That was clearly an invitation for something more, right?

Mere days ago he had worked up the courage to text her, swearing to himself that he wouldn’t get his hopes up. But if that was the case, then why was he standing outside of the University’s recreational building scanning the area for her to see if she had actually left with someone like he was told only moments prior? 

Just when he’d worked up the courage to try to approach her. 

He was crushed.

“God, seriously?” 

Solo turned at the voice, which appeared behind him and sliced through the silence (and his dignity) like a katana. 

The last person in the world that Solo wanted to witness him in this way was Kelly. 

“What?” he said.

“Don’t what me.” Kelly leaned against a nearby wall, playing with her phone as she spoked. “I was lowkey watching you in there, staring at Michelle from across the room. I had to stop though because it was just… really depressing.”

Solo rolled his eyes. “That it?” He wasn’t in the mood for a tongue lashing in addition to rejection.

“Just about,” she replied. “I’m waiting for an Über.”

“She asked me to come, and then I guess she left with some guy from the rowing team.” Solo wasn’t sure why he was telling her all that. Maybe it was because he felt like if he spoke his misery into the atmosphere it would weigh less on his shoulders and mind. It wasn’t working too well.

Kelly sighed. He really was hopeless in every aspect. “I have this friend named Heather,” she began, still paying him no mind over her phone, “she’s gorgeous and smart, hence way too good for you but she’s shy too, so maybe you’ll have something in common.”

“Yeah?” Solo said. His interest was piqued. This was mainly due to the fact that it seemed like she was trying to help him, and he wasn’t used to that type of thing coming from her. The two of them hardly ever spoke, let alone swapped contacts.

“Don’t fall in love just yet,” Kelly said, “I’m not telling you any more before I ask her if she’s even interested. Just worry about getting over Michelle.”

A white Volkswagon rolled up close to the building and Kelly moved for it, tucking her phone in her bag, but not before turning back to Solo with some final sage advice. 

“Besides… girl’s a thot,” she snickered. “You don’t need that negativity in your life.”

Solo watched Kelly disappear behind the car’s tinted windows and be driven off. Not surprisingly, he felt more alone now than he did before.
