The Kitchen (2019)
The Kitchen has received a savage critical reception. Thing is, this isn’t really a bad movie. The lead actresses are good, it’s approach the mob story thing is novel, first-time director Andrea Berloff shows she can do the director thing. The problem is, nothing stands out. Everything about it is just “ok”. As is, even with the female-centered story, it's just an inferior version of other movies we’ve already seen.
In 1978, Hell’s Kitchen, Kathy Brennan (Melissa Mccarthy), Ruby O’Carroll (Tiffany Haddish), and Claire Walsh (Elisabeth Moss) watch helplessly as their criminal husbands are hauled away by the police. It doesn’t take long for them to realize the Irish Mob talks big about taking care of its “family” but doesn’t follow-through. Desperate, the three women decide to take over where their husbands left off.
This movie should work so much better than it does. The three lead actresses are committed to their roles, making you forget all about their past comedic performances. They have the looks and the demeanors to sell you these meek little women who, against the mob's wishes, choose to embark on a life of crime. The problem is the screenplay (also written by Berloff), which tries to juggle too many balls and cannot give any of them the time they need. In the beginning, Kathy is the least comfortable with the idea of collecting protection money and carrying out the threats of violence. Over time, she gradually becomes more and more at ease with her new role but the transformation isn’t smooth or convincing. Claire and Ruby’s arcs are engaging but there’s just not enough time spent with them for you to leave satisfied. The ending, with its shocking reveals and backstabbings should floor you but the gaps are too numerous. It’s begging to leave the restrictive running time of a full-length feature and be turned into a TV series instead.
I was never bored during The Kitchen. Even when I kinda knew where certain threads were headed, I was curious to see them through. Ultimately, however, I don’t think The Kitchen has much staying power. It SHOULD, thanks to the cast, female-centered plot and a female director at the helm but it doesn’t. You’re reminded of other movies you’d rather watch: last year’s Widows and those women's choice to carry on their husbands' works, Michael Corleone's journey in The Godfather, the underhanded sliminess of Goodfellas but this is nowhere those films' leagues.
The Kitchen consistently makes you wish it was... more. Particularly during the last act when reveals take attention away from what this movie should’ve stayed focussed on: the drama as the characters carve a place for themselves in a world that’ll never accept them and slowly realize how comfortable they feel in that space. It's ok, as a rental. (Theatrical version on the big screen, August 14, 2019)

Via @toyinojihodutola 🙌🏾 Honored to have my work included in the upcoming group exhibition, "On Whiteness," opening at @thekitchen_nyc, this Weds, June 27th. The exhibition is part of an ongoing program of @theracialimaginary institute, founded by #ClaudiaRankine, to study whiteness as a deliberate construct too often accepted as a sociocultural default. #OnWhiteness is one of many efforts and events aimed to investigate and interrogate this. The show will be on view thru August 3rd.
