Did you know my mama Deborah Warfield used to be a singer too? 💞(that pic is my mama, featured in the #KalamazooGazette , backstage at her show in 1985/86 🤗). . At the Mercury Cafe Denver show on Wednesday, I told a story about how when I was about 7 or 8, my mama played Billie Holiday in a play called #BubblinBrownSugar in our hometown. I remember clearly, seeing her dress, the sequin cap on her head, and watching her sing her heart out on stage. Little did I know, that this would eventually become my life so many years later. 😌💞🎶 I decided to sing some #BillieHoliday for the show in honor of my mama, AND to encourage all of us to have our own. I spoke about the lyric in Erykah Badu's 'Bag Lady', when she says 'one day, he gone say, you crowdin my space'. Well he won't be able to say it if you've got your own, hunney! 💃🏽 Ladies, have your OWN money, your OWN businesses, your OWN dreams, so that nobody can't never take something away from you. I can imagine Billie Holiday sayin the same thing. She was fierce, my mama is fierce, and so am I. 😌✊🏽 I enjoyed making this tribute to my beautiful mama, and I can't wait till she's with us in Colorado so I can sing to her again too. 💞😌 For now, Loved Ones, enjoy this snippet, and I'll be posting more live videos on my #YouTube Channel tomorrow! 🤗💞💋 (Many thanks to Ryan Landell for capturing this, and many thanks to my mama Deborah Warfield for always inspiring me, even as a little girl. 💞🎶 (Feat. Eric Luba on keys, Matt Campbell on drums, Hudson Knott on bass, and Kenneth D Nieves on guitar 🎹🎸🥁🎸) #RajdulariMusic #GodBlessTheChile #NotYoMamasJazzSinger #JazzVocals #MyInspiration #TheLadyBug #MercuryCafeDenver (at Mercury Cafe Denver)
The Ladybug
“Get off!” My voice spread across the empty field, wind pushing back every flower and every blade of grass in it’s path. Katie flew away from me, shocked. Her shocking blue eyes looked at me, reading me. I looked down, unsure what to say now.
“You need to let it out.” She said softly, brushing her milky white hand over my arm. Her blonde hair had been brushed over one of her shoulders. I wanted to keep looking at her, the one person who could help me, but my brown mess of hair covered my eyes. I pulled the mop back and started to speak.
“ I met you, and nothing else mattered. Not school, not TV, nothing. You mattered more to me than I did.” I paused, thinking of what to say, “You were the first person I could actually love since Eli.” I choked. Eli had killed himself years ago. “But you, you taught me to care, to trust, something I hadn’t done since I was so, so young.” I thought back to when my father had brought the the whip down across my back. I reached for the scars that were spread across my back. “You taught me to love. You built me up, and you broke me. Tore me apart from the roots. You left nothing.” My southern accent was coming out. my voice raised. “I AM NOTHING NOW! I AM LOST!” My voice fell to a near whisper. “I’m broken.” I looked down and my mess of hair fell down again. I stood there, crying, my arms hung at my side.
“I still love you.” I heard Katie say from far away. “i think we-”
I cut her off screaming “NO YOU DON’T GET TO DO THAT! YOU DON’T GET TO JUST LEAVE AND THEN PULL THAT SHIT! YOU HAVE TO STOP PLAYING THESE GAMES!” I took a second to calm down. “We both know, getting back together is an awful idea, no matter how bad I want to. It will only end in more pain.” I looked at her face, trying to find a flaw. I came up short. “You need to leave. I- I can’t.” I turned and looked at the ground again.
A little lady bug was crawling on a blade of grass at my feet, climbing and climbing.
“Leo,” Katie said behind me. I turned to her. I was met with a kiss. The kiss. The last one I would get. Her lips were soft, yet firmly against mine. I let the sounds of nature fill me up. We stood there, wrapped in each other’s arms until Katie started to cry.
“Good bye Katie.” I whispered in her ear. “I love you.”
