Mafia! BTS - You Broke Up With Your Boyfriend
A/N: This is another part of the "You're their assistant series". It's independent of "You Work Late Together" because there Y/N doesn't have a boyfriend. Idk where this prompt took me, the boys' reactions and plots are so different. The next part will probably be the first date. Suggestions welcome. Also, I didn't proofread.
Mafia! BTS - You Get a Job as Their Assistant
Mafia! BTS - You Work Late Together
Warnings: profanity, violence, harassment, obsessive ex-boyfriend
MASTERLIST
You broke up with your boyfriend a wile ago. It was your decision for the most part. Although he was very sweet in the beginning B/N stopped investing even the slightest effort into the relationship. You were together long enough for you to start seriously caring about him but not enough for you to dedicate your life to him and getting nothing in return. He didn't take your news lightly though; he wouldn't even have a proper conversation. You saw it then in the heat of the argument how little he cared about you. He started calling you again, however, when he realized how much better his life was with you around.
Jin
You had just attended a meeting with Mr Kim, taking notes and providing the details to some business discussions. You've been working for Mr Kim for a little over two months now and it was a welcome distraction from the turmoil of your personal life. Little did you know your personal life was waiting by your desk with a bouquet of pale yellow carnations.
"Get me the files on the Incheon business please, Ms Y/N, and then you can take your lunch break," said your boss as he disappeared into his office.
"Of course," you agreed. You tried to hide the nerves in your voice. Only when the door closed behind him did you dare make your way to your desk where B/N was waiting for you. He had a stupid grin on his face as if the flowers would fix the poor excuse for a relationship that you had.
"What are you doing here? I'm at work," you snapped as discretely as you could. The grin fell off B/N's face.
"You weren't replying to my texts so here I am," said B/N and offered you the inappropriate flowers. You didn't mind carnations but not like this and yellow was the wrong color.
"There is a reason why I didn't reply to your texts. We're over, I thought I made that clear - you made that clear," you pointed out as you got behind your desk and put away your things.
"Come on, let's have lunch together. I know you have your break now," said your ex, reminding you of the Incheon files that your boss asked for. You gasped and grabbed the files from your desk but it was too late. Mr Kim was already in front of your desk.
"Mr Kim, I'm so sorry, I was about to get these to you," you said quickly and handed him the brown file. His eyes were on B/N, however.
"Is your grandmother sick?" asked Mr Kim as his stern motionless gaze fell to the bouquet in your ex's hands. Your cheeks flushed red and you could feel the blood pulsate beneath your skin.
"What?" frowned B/N and tried to make himself taller but he was nowhere near Mr Kim. Even his posture made him intimidating.
"The carnations," said Mr Kim. You couldn't help but feel a hint of satisfaction when you realized you and your boss were of the same mind. You might have laughed if you weren't so embarrassed that your personal life was being hung on display at work.
"He is leaving, I'm so sorry, Mr Kim," you said before your ex could say something stupid. Mr Kim looked at you in your perfectly chosen outfit and not a hair out of place, and glanced again at your ex who didn't even reach your ankles much less your knees.
"I'm only leaving once you agree to get lunch with me," insisted B/N and made you flush in an even brighter shade of red. Your heart was beating wildly as you tried not to make a scene in front of your boss.
You were about to speak, taking your ex with you someplace more private but your boss beat you to it. "Ms Y/N already has plans for lunch and they do not involve you."
Your ex scoffed but he couldn't help but look at the two of you. You were staring at your boss in awe, your heart nearly escaping your chest as his silken voice echoed in your head.
"Is that how it is? You're sleeping with him?" snarled B/N out of nowhere and threw the carnations on the floor. You flinched at his tone, shocked at the pace at which things escalated.
"I'm not sleeping with anyone!" you defended yourself but simply saying those words out loud in front of your coworkers made you want to bury yourself from embarrassment. "I'm so sorry, Mr Kim-" you tried to apologize.
"That's alright, Ms Y/N. You're the one owed an apology," said your boss gently. His eyes were soft on you but you could tell that he was livid.
"Are you crazy? I'm not apologizing to this-" Your ex couldn't finish the sentence though. Mr Kim's knuckles filled his mouth and knocked him straight on the ground. You jumped with a gasp and tried to help B/N up but your boss stopped you.
"Don't," he said not unkindly. The look in his eyes was sympathetic and something else that you couldn't pinpoint.
Your ex was fine except for a bloody lip and a deeply wounded pride. He grabbed the weary carnations and threw you the dirtiest look he could manage. You knew that he wouldn't try and text you again - not for you, but for his pride.
You were holding your breath the entire time. You couldn't even look at your boss.
"I don't think I've ever felt this embarrassed in my life," you said half to yourself half to your boss. "It's no excuse but I don't even know how he got into the building-"
"It's not your fault, Ms Y/N, you have nothing to apologize for," said Mr Kim as politely as always. You couldn't believe it when your coworkers asked you if it was as terrifying working for Mr Kim as they imagined, how stern and cut-throat he was, especially when it came to business. Sure, you recognized that part of him in meetings but he was never anything other than kind and understanding to you.
"It's never going to happen again, I promise," you vowed as professionally as you could although the scene left your hands shaking and your cheeks flushed with fever.
"Stop," said Mr Kim gently when he saw how distressed you were. Even though it was just things like this that made you break up with B/N in the first place, you still cared about him at one point. It was a difficult process detaching yourself from those memories. Now you felt exposed at work as well where it was your safe haven.
"Lunch, I think," Mr Kim tried to brighten the mood.
"I think I lost all of my appetite," you confessed. It wouldn't be the first time you shared a meal with your boss. Some days it was hard to even make time for lunch or a simple break so you'd work over meals.
"Don't worry, Ms Y/N, lunch is just a code word for drinks. I think we both need one," smiled Mr Kim. You couldn't help but laugh a little and nod in agreement. You noticed your boss flex his fingers.
"Oh my god, your hand," you said quickly and inspected it yourself. The knuckles were bruised slightly but there was no blood or visible injury. Mr Kim's face drained off all expression as he watched you hold his hand gently in yours. You blushed as you realized how unprofessional you were.
"I'll ... I'll get my purse," you cleared your throat and let go of his hand. Your stomach filled with butterflies as your heartbeat quickened.
The following morning there was a bouquet of soft pink peonies on your desk and they weren't from your ex-boyfriend.
Namjoon
"Everything ready, Ms Y/N?" asked your boss as he held the door of the conference room for you.
"Yes, of course," you smiled and entered before him. Your perfume lingered behind you as Mr Kim followed you inside, doing everything in his power to keep his focus on the business.
You took a seat to the right of Mr Kim and opened your tablet and organized your hard copies. The meeting was the final stage of a minor merger that the company oversaw. Just as the final details were being discussed, Mr Kim's second assistant, who filled in during your absence or whenever there was much and more to keep a hold on like today, walked into conference room. You figured there must have been an important call for Mr Kim but instead of going to him, she came to you.
"I'm sorry, Ms Y/N, but there is a Mr B/N here to see you," she whispered in your ear but she might as well have poured a bucket of cold water down your head.
"What?" you blurted, your eyes as wide as plates. Mr Kim's gaze found yours and your face grew red. It was one thing for your private life to be a mess but you couldn't have it unfolded where you worked.
"He's very persistent, says it's an emergency," the second assistant whispered and then left. Your heart was pulsating heavily against your throat as you figured what to do. You didn't even dare meet Mr Kim's sharp eyes. You knew how much he wanted meetings to go smoothly and without distractions.
"Excuse me," you apologized and hurried outside as discretely as you could. The other businessmen and women didn't seem to mind but you could feel your boss's eyes burn through your back.
B/N waited by your desk. He was pacing around leisurely when you came up to him. You were almost the same height now with you in heels.
"Hey, baby," B/N grinned, his hands hanging in his pockets. You shook your head in utter disbelief, fuming with anger.
"What kind of emergency could possibly make you come to my office? When we were dating, you couldn't even remember where I worked," you gritted through your teeth, trying to keep your voice down.
"Emergency? Baby, I just wanted to see you. I want to talk to you - about us," said B/N with a smile and tried to caress your cheek. You stepped back. Weeks ago you would have begged him to say something like that - back when you still cared.
"Don't you ever call me baby again, do you hear me?" you pointed your finger at his chest. "Are you trying to ruin my career the way you ruined my personal life when you plied me with lies all the while you were thinking about your ex?"
"Sweetheart, I made a mistake-"
"Damn right you did," you nodded and crossed your arms over your chest. "But I won't be making it again. You should see yourself out and make sure never to bother me again, B/N."
You turned around and headed back to the meeting when you realized your boss was standing only a few feet behind you. You froze on the spot.
"Y/N, wait!" asked B/N and grabbed your elbow.
"Let go of me!" you demanded and pulled your arm away. Your ears were ringing.
"Y/N, come on, I made a mistake-" B/N insisted and tried to get a hold of you. Your boss pushed you behind him.
"You should do as she says," warned Mr Kim, a good head taller than B/N. Although you ex wasn't weak by any means, Kim Namjoon was an armor of a man and in that moment he was protecting you. The truth was he had been wondering what was going on with you a few weeks ago. Your work wasn't as flawless as usual and your mind seemed to be elsewhere. It all made sense now and the thought of someone not paying you the respect you deserve made his hand eager to punch through your ex's face or more.
"Fine," said B/N and backed away as if Mr Kim's touch were poison. "But this isn't over yet," he spat before he finally left.
When your boss turned around and faced you, you were at a loss for words. There was nothing you could think of that could salvage what had just happened.
"Mr Kim, I don't know what to say," you began, your hands shaking and your cheeks flushed. "I'm so sorry for interrupting the meeting. I thought I could contain the situation if I dealt with it immediately. It will never happen again, I promise. I know how you hate-"
"Are you alright?" your boss stopped you, his voice softer than usual. You hadn't noticed it but your eyes were full of tears. It was all too much too quickly - the break up, B/N coming to your office, you interrupting the meeting and jeopardizing the only stability you had in your life right now - your work.
"Please don't fire me. It will never happen again, you have my word," you asked quietly. If your voice were any louder, your tears would have fallen and your embarrassment would be complete.
Mr Kim stared at you, his usually sharp glare softening. "I'm not firing you, Ms Y/N. I just want to make sure you're alright." He gestured to his office and you joined him there, not entirely believing his words. He invited you to sit down and poured you a glass of whiskey.
"I don't think that's a good idea," you said quietly although it was tempting. Mr Kim set the glass down in front of you in case you changed your mind.
"You haven't answered my question," said Mr Kim and sat down in the armchair beside you. You looked at him. "Are you alright?" he repeated.
You nodded. "I am, I just ... I didn't expect this to happen, least of all at work. If I had known ... I'd never bring personal matters into this office," you tried to apologize again.
"I know," agreed Mr Kim, "You're very elegant and professional."
"I don't know about that," you referred to the first of the two adjectives. Your head was spinning and you had that sip of whiskey nevertheless.
"I do," said Mr Kim in all seriousness. It was like he was looking right through you. "I'd feel better if you had a security guard beside you," he suggested. You froze, not knowing where this came from.
"You don't mean ... because of B/N?" you frowned.
"He seems less than prepared to accept your rejection and you're an important asset to this company." You're important to me.
"No, nothing's going to happen," you insisted, the thought never even crossing your mind. B/N may have been short-tempered but he would never hurt you, you were sure of that. "He's just immature and desperate, that's all," you assured to your boss although you couldn't tame the butterflies in your tummy.
Mr Kim measured you. You could swear there was a glint of a smile in his eyes. "That I can understand," he said. His voice was low and raspy. "Any man would be desperate if he lost a woman like you."
Yoongi
It took weeks for your life to get back to normal, for you to stop thinking about your ex. Even though things were only growing worse in the end, the memories of the beginning lingered on even after the break up. You knew you did the right thing - it grew more and more obvious everyday as you acquired distance and saw things for what they were. Your ex was a pile of red flags but you cared too much about him then to realize it.
You felt good about yourself when you came into the office. That is, until you saw a supermarket bouquet of orange lilies on your desk, still wrapped in plastic and the price tag on them. You looked to the second assistant who smiled at you. Someone delivered them and you knew who but she didn't.
"Are they from your boyfriend?" asked the assistant just as Mr Min walked in.
"Good morning," he said and stopped in front of your desk. His dark eyes fell to the poorly arranged bouquet of flowers. Their strong fragrance was already dimming the floor. Although lilies were beautiful flowers, especially white and pink ones, you couldn't help but associate them with funerals, particularly their scent.
"No, they're not. I'm single," you assured confidently as you grabbed the bouquet. "Do you want them?" you offered the flowers to the second assistant. She seemed disappointed when she realized she wouldn't be able to get the scoop on your love life.
"No, I can't. I'm sorry, I'm allergic." Her face fell as you carried the flowers into the breakroom. You hid them into a corner on the counter where you wouldn't see them even if you came to refill your coffee. As much as you hated the bouquet and what it represented, you could never throw away perfectly healthy flowers.
"Everything alright?" Your boss's voice made you jump. You were so deep in thought that you didn't even notice his presence.
"Yes, everything's fine. I'm sorry," you said much more calmly. His eyes studied you.
"Do you need a day off?" he asked, not unkindly. You were surprised by his offer and even more so by his gentle mannerism.
"N-No, of course not," you tried to collect your thoughts. "Everything's fine. And besides, there the meeting about the Gangnam business."
You grabbed a coffee mug from the shelf but Mr Min beat you to the pot. He poured you some coffee and then himself although it was usually the other way around. He was standing close and his fragrance gave you goosebumps. You tried to take a step back but your body wouldn't budge. You enjoyed Min Yoongi's closeness much more than you allowed yourself to admit.
"Not a fan of lilies?" asked Mr Min.
"What?" you blurted. You glanced over your shoulder at the bouquet on the other side of the room. "Oh ... No, they're fine, it's just ..." You didn't want to go into detail about your past relationship. "They're funeral flowers," you managed although the truth was that any flowers if they came from B/N would have angered you.
"It's quite apt actually," you realized as you accepted the coffee from your boss's hand. Your relationship seemed bright and optimistic but all the while you could still smell the decay.
"i could just have him murdered," offered your boss. You woke from your thought with a small laugh, never realizing he was more serious than you could imagine.
"No, that's fine, thank you," you smiled with your spirits lifted. Mr Min smiled as well, a sight as rare as a blue moon. Your heart skipped a beat and the butterflies in your stomach went crazy. The hatred for B/N and the way he treated you made it all the easier for you to feel something for someone else.
Your eyes locked and you were the first to look away. You could feel the blood rushing to your cheeks as you cleared your throat. "So, the Gangnam meeting at 10," you tried to change the conversation but your boss's eyes were not letting you go.
"Mm," he agreed absent-mindedly as his gaze shifted to the loose strand of your hair. He picked it between his long fingers and tucked it behind your ear. You held your breath, your eyes wide.
"Any plans for dinner?" asked Mr Min. You almost dropped your coffee when you pulled out your phone to check his schedule.
"I believe you're free today. Do you want me to make a reservation?" you offered nearly saying something stupid; it almost sounded as if he were asking about your plans.
"I'll take care of it. What I meant is if are you free tonight, Y/N?" asked your boss, knocking the breath from your chest. You stared at him and tried to comprehend what he said.
"I'm free," you said more confidently than you felt. You could feel your heart in your throat.
"Good," he agreed and took another long look at you, "It's not about work," he said more quietly as he bent his neck to come closer to your height.
"I know," you nodded, staring up at him.
Hoseok
"I'm not interested," you told your ex when he ambushed you with excuses in front of your office building. You just returned from your lunch break when you saw B/N outside Mr Jung's company. They wouldn't let him inside without an employee's pass or special invitation so your ex waited for you right in front of the entrance.
"Y/N, I had time to think, I'm ready now, I promise. I made a mistake," repeated B/N and tried to take your hand but you took a step back. There was a time when you'd do anything to hear him say those words but after the way he handled your break up, you never wanted to hear from him again, much less see him.
"I am not interested," you spoke each word individually. You pushed past him but he caught your elbow.
"Let go of me!" you demanded with a look so cold in your eyes it would make hell freeze over. B/N didn't let go, however.
"Y/N, you have to give me another chance-"
"Go back to your ex and ask her to give you another chance," you snarled through your teeth and yanked your arm from his grip. All the while you were together he was still thinking about her even though he promised everything to you at the same time.
You turned around and made for the door. You could see B/N trying to take your arm again in the glass reflection but someone stopped him. You turned around and saw Mr Jung's hand gripping tightly onto your ex's shoulder.
"I wouldn't try that if I were you," smiled Mr Jung. You froze in place, eyes wide as you watched B/N's gaze shift between you and your boss and back at you.
"Is that how it is? That's why you won't return my calls, you-"
"I strongly advise you not to finish that sentence," warned Mr Jung, his face draining of all emotion. His eyebrows furrowed into a deep frown and his jaw clenched. The grip he had on your ex's shoulder would leave a bruise.
"Mr Jung, please, it's not worth it," you asked and checked your wristwatch. "We should go, the guys will be here any moment now about the merger," you tried although Mr Jung's business partners won't be here for another half an hour.
Your boss's dark glare shifted from your ex to you where it softened slightly. You realized he wasn't just your boss in that moment but someone you could rely on - someone he wanted you to rely on.
"Let go of me," spat B/N and shook off your boss's hand. Mr Jung turned to him but your ex only threw you a nasty look before he fixed his jacket and left.
"You shouldn't have," you said to Mr Jung once you were in the elevator. He looked at you and you had no choice but to do the same. "I can handle B/N," you assured, "But thank you."
You were sincere although you wished your boss didn't see that part of your personal life. You enjoyed working for him more than you cared to admit and you wouldn't do anything to jeopardize this job.
"You deserve someone better, Y/N," said Mr Jung, calling you only by your name for the first time since you started working together. Your gaze returned to him but he was staring at the elevator door. It was a long way up and you hoped the door would never open.
"Like who?" you asked before you could stop your tongue. Your boss froze for a moment. Blush crept to you cheeks when he looked at you. His dark eyes pierced right through yours as if they could see inside of your mind. Your lips parted when he turned to you and his hand reached for your cheek. He leaned down closer as his thumb smoothed your soft skin.
"You already know the answer to that, Ms Y/N," said Mr Jung just before the elevator bell sounded. Your boss stepped back and waited for you to exit first but you couldn't move. Your eyes were locked with his and you had forgotten how to breathe.
"Alright," you nodded, your turn to knock the breath from his chest. You tried to leave the elevator but your boss pulled you back. The door closed again as Hoseok pulled your face to him and kissed you. His hands cupped your cheeks as his perfume filled your nose. Shivers ran down your spine. You gave into the kiss and wrapped your arms around your boss's neck.
"I'll treat you like a goddess," said Hoseok against your lips.
"I know," you nodded and found his lips again.
Jimin
You were going through the schedule of the day with your boss when your phone started buzzing. You checked the screen and turned off the call. Mr Park's eyes followed your actions and before long the phone started buzzing again.
"You can answer it," he allowed but you weren't interested.
"That's alright," you tried to disguise your discomfort behind a small smile. "So, you have an 11.30 with your business partners, a lunch with Mr Shin and Mrs Oh cancelled the three o'clock meeting - rescheduled for next Tuesday."
Your phone started buzzing again. Your turned it on silent.
"You should answer. Maybe it's an emergency," suggested Mr Park and put down the papers.
"It's not," you assured and gathered the documents. Your ex had been trying to contact you all weekend and you did the fateful mistake of answering once. He was full of regret of how your relationship ended and begged for a second chance.
"Everything alright, Ms Y/N?" asked your boss when he saw the frown on your face. You looked at him, not even realizing how deep in thought you were. His usually sharp eyes softened to see the concern on your face. Your heart skipped a beat even at just the thought of him caring.
"I'm sorry, yes, everything's alright," you offered a reassuring smile but he was far from convinced.
The following morning you came to find a bouquet of yellow roses on your desk that stopped you on your tracks. Infidelity.
"Sounds about right," you thought out loud and grabbed the flowers so harshly you nearly broke the stems. You threw them out in the breakroom. If you had done it in your desk bin, they would have lingered there and reminded you of his betrayal for the rest of the day.
You jumped with a gasp when you turned around, coming face to face with your boss. He must have come in early - if he even left in the first place.
"What are you doing here?" you blurted as your cheeks grew hot. You never liked displaying your emotions for everyone to see, least of all at work.
"I own the place," said Park Jimin and had a sip of his coffee. His eyes shifted between you and the yellow flowers hanging from the trash.
"No, yes, I know. I'm sorry, I didn't mean it that way," you apologized quickly and fixed your skirt. "I just didn't expect you this early. Should we go through your schedule for the day?"
You knew that was a no - both to the schedule and your attempt to change the topic of conversation. Goosebumps rose on your arms as Mr Park walked up to you. Seeing him up close you knew he didn't leave the office. Even though his eyes were tired there was a storm of thoughts behind them.
"You don't like the flowers?" he asked, his focused gaze shifting between your eyes. Your mouth parted.
"I-I ... They weren't from you, were they?" you asked astounded as you glanced nervously at the yellow roses and your face burned so hot you wondered when the steam was going to rise from your skin.
"No," smiled Mr Park and showed all of his perfect teeth. The butterflies jumped in your stomach but a part of you wished the flowers did come from him. There was an attraction between you and your boss but you dared not act on it.
"You'll know when they're from me, Ms Y/N," said Park Jimin as he looked down at you with a soft smile. His words made it impossible for you to reply.
"G-Good," you stuttered and crossed your arms over your chest as you cleared your throat. Your heart was hammering against your chest.
"Your boyfriend sent them?" persisted your boss. Your face fell at the thought of B/N and the anxiety returned to your chest. Mr Park's smile disappeared at the sight of your discomfort.
"It's none of my business," apologized Mr Park.
"They're from an overly persistent ex-boyfriend," you confessed and pressed a cold hand against your hot neck. "It won't interfere with work," you promised.
Your boss stared at you pensively. "I know," he nodded but the discomfort on your beautiful features only grew deeper.
"B/N something, isn't it?" asked Mr Park when he paused outside his office, his hand on the door. You looked up from your desk.
"Yes," you nodded, "Why?" But your boss didn't say anything else. He closed the door of his office. Your ex kept trying to call you all morning, probably trying to make sure you got his flowers. Mr Park asked you to reschedule his lunch with Mr Shin. It was around the same time you stopped receiving calls from your ex.
When you got home that evening, there was a stunning bouquet of flowers waiting on your doorstep. Soft pink roses and white peonies. There was no card but you knew who sent them.
Taehyung
Just as things began falling into place again and you managed to move on from your past relationship, you woke up to a chain of texts from your ex, begging for the two of you to meet. You had no intention of replying but you didn't have to. Come your lunch break, B/N was waiting in front of your office building. He was holding a supermarket bouquet of lilac and yellow chrysanthemums that you just knew he picked up on the way here. Still, the shock of seeing him for the first time since the break up overpowered your anger and annoyance about the way he treated you.
You could only look at him for a moment before you turned around and walked right back into the building. You were so distracted by B/N calling your name behind you that you didn't see where you were going. Just as you reached the lobby you crashed against none other than your boss, Mr Kim. You stumbled back but he took your arms and steadied you. Even if you hadn't looked him in the eye, you would have known it was him. You could recognize his perfume in a crowd of men.
"What's wrong?" asked Mr Kim when he saw the look on your face. Although you loved your job and working with Mr Kim you didn't want him or anyone else at work to know the details of your personal life, especially not your failed love life.
"Nothing," you said instinctively and stepped back. Your arms felt cold where Mr Kim's hands were.
"Y/N!" called your ex again when he managed to push through the crowd of lunch-going employees.
You glanced over your shoulder at B/N, hoping the earth would open up and swallow you. Your cheeks flushed red as your heartbeat raced.
"Excuse me," you said to your boss and stepped aside with B/N.
"You can't be here," you said as you felt Mr Kim's dark gaze burn through your back. "I don't want to talk to you - ever. We're done."
"Y/N, don't be like that. Look, I made a mistake, but I got you flowers. I know how much you love them," said B/N and smiled so genuinely you realized he actually believed this was going to erase the fact that he treated you like trash.
"I hate chrysanthemums. They're funeral flowers," you said without emotion and made to leave. B/N tried to take your elbow but your boss caught it before he could touch you. You spun around, now standing behind Mr Kim.
"I wonder who do you think you are," said Mr Kim as smoothly as if he were reciting poetry. The lobby grew quiet as the church. The veins in your boss's palm protruded from how hard he was holding your ex's wrist.
"Who the fuck are you?" spat B/N and tried to yank his hand free. He only managed when Mr Kim released him.
"I'm Kim Taehyung," your boss smiled with his eyes. Shivers ran down your spine as you watched the scene unfold as if you were in a movie. Something in your ex's gaze shifted but you couldn't tell why. You must have mentioned your boss a thousand times to him when the two of you were still dating. Not that he ever listened a word.
"Please," you said quietly as you came up to your boss. "It's okay." His dark eyes turned to you without a blink. You could see him studying you as if your words equated an unsolvable mathematical problem.
"I'm sorry about this, Mr Kim," you apologized before you turned around to face your ex. "He's leaving," you gritted through your teeth. B/N's eyes flickered between you and your boss as a heavy frown darkened his face.
"Fuck you," he spat bitterly. B/N turned on his heel and marched for the door where he slammed the bouquet into the bin.
Slowly people began to move once again and left on their way. Your cheeks were pulsating with fever. When you saw the dark look on your boss's face, you thought you were going to be sick. Your hands were clammy as you prepared yourself to get fired.
"I'm so sorry-"
"What are you talking about, Ms Y/N?" Mr Kim cut you off as his eyes returned to you. His frown softened although not much.
"I had no idea he would come here ... I was going to get lunch and he was waiting outside ..." you tried to explain yourself but you were at a loss for words.
"Has this happened before?" your boss frowned again, this time his voice was harsher than its usual silken tone.
"N-No, of course not," you struggled to gather your thoughts. "I haven't seen him in weeks."
Your words seemed to calm him down some, however, the strange this was that he seemed worried about you and not the scene your ex caused.
"Good," he said but you could see it in his restless eyes the case was not settled yet. You wanted to know what he was thinking.
"What are you thinking about?" you blurted out loud. The storm of emotions passed through Kim Taehyung's dark gaze as he stared down into your eyes. Soft amusement played in his irises and blush crept to your cheeks.
"I want to invite you out to dinner, Ms Y/N," he said quietly as a small smile crept into the corners of his lips.
You stared at him, your heart pounding against your throat. "What?"
"How do you feel about tomorrow night?" he pursued, making sure you knew he meant it. Although it was a question, it sounded as confident as a statement.
That was not what he was thinking about before but his invitation made you forget all about it. Taehyung was thinking about what he is going to do to your ex if he comes near you again.
The way your boss was looking at you, however, made your knees weak. You could feel the attraction since the day you started working for him but you never acted on it. First you were in a relationship and then you were trying to patch up the ruins that the break up left.
"I'd like that," you found yourself saying. You couldn't hold back the smile that spread across your lips.
Jungkook
Your phone had not stopped buzzing with text and phone calls from your ex since Sunday night. Although it was his idea for the two of you to cut all ties, he was now desperate to talk to you. Monday passed and then Tuesday came. When you arrived at work there was a box of chocolates on your desk and a bouquet of supermarket flowers. The delivery alone must have cost more than the two combined. Besides, you didn't even like the chocolates he got you and the flowers were far from your favorite.
"Oooh, who are those from?" smiled your coworker. She arrived right after you before you could dispose of the evidence that you were ever in a relationship with that man.
"No one," you said bitterly as you grabbed the flowers and the chocolates. You gave the candy to your coworker and took the flowers to the breakroom where you wouldn't be able to see them until they happily died.
The texts and the phone calls really started pouring in after the delivery but you weren't answering. You were more done with him than ever before. The gifts just reminded you of how you were always there for him but he never bothered making an effort for you.
"We should have a strategy ready as soon as possible for the Ulsan business," you said after going to through the plan for the day with your boss. You could never have imagined it when you started working for Mr Jeon that going though his schedule and having coffee together in his office every morning would become a habit. He seemed intimidating at first but once you learned the ropes working with him was effortless. Besides, you enjoyed the stability of a work routine.
Mr Jeon was staring through the window as he contemplated what you said and he knew you were right. He wanted the Ulsan business but he couldn't show up empty-handed to the meeting.
"How do you feel about working over lunch, Ms Y/N?" asked your boss. You knew he wouldn't take it personally if you said no but you didn't mind.
"We are still eating though, right?" you asked as you got up and grabbed your tablet. Mr Jeon turned to you, a smile in the corner of his lips.
"Of course," he agreed and allowed you to choose the restaurant.
The was a place you often went to during lunch break only half a block away. It was sunny so you walked there, discussing the ways to lock the Ulsan business. You were checking something on your tablet when you nearly crashed into a group of friends if your boss hadn't taken your hand and pulled you out of the way. You looked up immediately when your shoulder brushed against his chest instead.
"Oh ... Thank you," you breathed. Your cheeks grew red as you realized what happened.
"Leave the business for now," said Mr Jeon and took the tablet from your hands just as you arrived to the restaurant. He opened the door for you and the table was already waiting for you. It wasn't the first time you worked together over lunch and sometimes you even preferred it. The girls at work were often busy and you didn't like eating alone.
"You're right. I think that's the strategy we should go with. It makes perfect sense from the financial aspect as well," you agreed as you and your boss headed back to the office.
Your heart dropped, however, when you saw B/N in front of the big glass entrance. You spotted him from far away and the sight of him stopped you on your tracks.
"Oh, god," you whispered under your breath. You stepped behind the nearest lamppost and turned your back to your ex. He would never recognize you from this distance. Your mind was racing and your heart. Your boss stopped as well and watched your unusual behavior.
"What are you doing?" asked Mr Jeon as he stepped in front of you.
You studied his frown, not remotely ready to share the details of your failed love life with your boss. "Nothing," you lied and ran a hand through your hair. "I'll ... I'll come right up."
"Why not now?" asked your boss. Your arms were crossed over your chest and you tried to keep yourself from doing it but you still glanced over your shoulder and checked if B/N was still there. Mr Jeon's eyes followed your gaze but there was two dozen people in front of the office having coffee and a cigarette.
"Who is it?" he asked, bringing your gaze immediately to him.
"What?" you said timidly.
"Y/N," warned your boss. His body was almost as tense as yours when you closed your eyes for a second and tried to think.
"It's nothing, I can handle it," you tried to reassure Mr Jeon but even you weren't sure if B/N was going to try something. The amount of times he tried to call you was unseemly.
Your boss looked behind you again and studied the crowd. He knew some of the people; they worked at the company. There was only one guy who stood out though.
"The guy in the band t-shirt," said your boss quietly. Your eyes snapped to him so quickly you didn't even have to say a word to confirm it.
"How did you know?" you asked shocked.
Mr Jeon measured your beautiful face. "It's my job." He paused. "Some guy you rejected?"
You swallowed uncomfortably. "I ... We dated actually," you confessed in spite of yourself. It was your boss's turn to look at you in disbelief. It was the most emotion you had ever seen him display but somehow it made the words pour out of you.
"We broke up weeks ago but he's been calling me for days and today there were flowers and chocolate waiting on my desk and he must have left another dozen calls since then and I'm so sorry this is happening right now, I had no idea he would show up like this-"
"Y/N," your boss said your name twice or thrice before you heard him. His hands cupped your cheeks and made you pause and regain your breath.
"I think I'm scared," you whispered the thought that's been on your mind since Sunday. It wasn't normal for anyone to try and contact a person this many times, much less show up at their workplace uninvited. You'd heard stories of crazy ex-boyfriends before but you never thought it would happen to you. You thought you knew him.
Jungkook's face drained of color and his eyebrows fell. His shoulders tensed like a bow. He caressed your cheek with one of his thumbs before he took back his hands and stormed towards B/N. Your mouth dropped and there was no going back. You ran after your boss but it all happened in the blink of an eye.
"Y/N!" called your ex, only seeing you and not the raging bull of a man that was headed in his direction. Before B/N realized it, Jungkook's fist punched through his jaw.
"Oh my god," you breathed, frozen in place. It was as if you had left your body and watched the scene from somewhere else.
Jungkook picked up B/N by the collar of his t-shirt and slammed him against the nearest tree. Your ex fought back but he was no match for someone like your boss. Jungkook had him pinned down.
"What the fuck do you want?" snarled B/N. You must have talked to him about your boss a thousand times but they never met.
"Funny you should ask," your boss smiled before his face changed into a frown so solemn it gave you goosebumps. "Think about calling Ms Y/N again and I'll leave you no fingers to dial the number with," warned Jungkook quietly against B/N's face yet his tone made your insides churn.
"Is she with you now?" frowned B/N, his gaze shifting between you and your boss. You held your breath.
"She's with whomever she wants," said Jungkook, "But if I ever see you near her again, you're going to wish you'd never met her."
