In 1868, 70,000 people died from a combined earthquake/tsunami disaster in the south of Peru; the earthquake was 8.5 magnitude in the Peru-Chile Trench. Waves as big as 90ft caused over $300million worth of destruction. Part of the Ring of Fire, Peru has a history of earthquake & tsunami activity causing mass destruction. Should a similar scale disaster hit the north coast (where there is often earthquake activity), most of the coastal region's oil industry could be wiped out, devastating the ocean and fringing villages.
