Quieting the mind, choosing to be present with our bodies and minds instead of in the to-do lists of the future is not something we’re conditioned to do in to survive late-stage capitalism. On top of that, most of us realistically don’t have time to take a break during a busy workday to meditate or do some breath work. What we can do today to channel all this indecisive restless energy is resourceful action. If you’re caught between two chores, it might behoove you to pick the one that’s easiest to do first, or that can pave the way for an easier second task later. For example, if you need to go to the supermarket after work but are afraid it’ll take too long to make dinner, leave something to defrost before you head out to work and by the time you get home it’ll have cut at least half an hour off your prep time. If what’s got you restless is a specific, anxiety inducing task or action, start with something simpler and easier to accomplish first. Completing it will give you the endorphins of having cleared some pressure off as well as a boost of confidence to get the harder stuff out of the way. The key here is action. Your mind will not be your friend today if you procrastinate too much, and if you do you may spiral out worrying about the future. Doing something now will help keep your brain in the present, which brings you one step closer to being emotionally present.
