"Matt…hey, Matt!"
[Matthew ran over to greet the other boy, his tiny mop of strawberry blonde hair bouncing and swaying about around his head as he moved.][He wore a wide grin and his eyes sparkled, stumbling somewhat over his own feet when he sees that he’d caught the other boy’s attention.]
[Because of how strict his father was, Matthew didn’t get to see Matt much outside of school; his father was very particular about who his sons—especially Matthew— were allowed to speak to, and what kind of influences each had on his boys.][Matthew was only given an hour of outside play every day, and only one of those days in the week was he let out of his father’s watch to play with the other boy.][Well, that had been the case, before his father had caught them ‘getting curious’ together by the lakeside.]
[It was tedious for a child like Matthew to go on with a select handful of friends, most of which he didn’t even like or relate to. But in a way, it was okay. Because he and Matt had made a promise; A promise that he intended to keep for as long as time shall stand.][Slowly, Matthew halts, no more than an arms length away from the slightly older boy. He extends his pinkie finger, beaming as he catches his breath.]
"I-I promised you, didn’t I?? I told you I’d come back, even if dad told me not to. We’re best friend, right? Even if I get in trouble, we’ll always be friends,"
[Matthew only smiles as Matt hooks his finger around his own.]
——
"It’s funny, isn’t it?"
[Matthew flops back on the couch, head resting back onto the larger man’s lap.][He stares up at him over the rim of his glasses, a smile tugging at his lips.] “After all these years, here we are, living together under the same roof,” [A laugh finds its way past his lips, and he sits up again to hug his legs against his chest.]
"It’s strange how things worked out like this,"
