How Writers Work with Theme in Film & TV

What is theme? A theme is the inferred stance taken on the topic of a story. Everything that happens within a story should reference back to a theme

The most frequent problem with animated (though not limited to) movies tend to be that they lack one clear central theme. I recommend watching Chris Miller and Phil Lord movies to learn about portraying a central theme in animation. They have a talent with making the message clear and portrayed throughout, while all the while preserving smaller minor moments.

Create and post a Thematic Statement for your 10-12 page assignment.

The overarching message of my screenplay is that systems of power encourage minorities to turn against one another rather than recognizing the real evil that exists within the systems of power themselves.

This is reflected in my piece through the behavior of the community at large who turn against accused ‘witches’ to supposedly protect themselves. It is also shown through the main storyline of the screenplay, that of a gay man accusing a young woman of being a witch.

As such, the Thematic Statement for my piece is “Oppression leads to fear, self-interest and disunity.”
