On magical folk and their treatment of merlin and morgana
It’s interesting how the dragon and druids treat merlin as the light and morgana as his darkness, the one who will stop him from achieving destiny, his doom.
While the cailleach and the other powerful magic beings treat morgana as some kind of light while merlin follows in her shadow, in the darkness... her doom.
They are both the darkness and light to different magicfolk. And they are each other’s darkness and destruction.
On the politics this treatment implies
Different factions of magic treat either merlin or morgana as their chosen champion.
There is disunity among their kind because reforms and governmental changes will never be that simple. Against camelot/albion's united front against magic, they stood no chance. If you do too much pacifism (or wtv long game gaius and merlin were playing), it takes too long and merlin wasn't smart/powerful enough to have more allies with him. Terrorism (morgana) wasn't the answer either, it just hardened people's views against magic.
There was another way tbh. They should have just stop treating magic as something that should only be used for either good or evil. Merlin keeps saying that he was born with magic and it was just a part of him but he was too obsessed with doing "good" (in the name of the monarchy/prophecy he serves, not necessarily the magic-kind). Morgana used magic to mainly harm others, claiming that "there was no other way" and "i fight for my people" even when she was just seeking revenge all the time. They were both on the extremes sides of the political struggle and as a result they have become immensely self-righteous.
Merlin / Morgana should have been focusing on Magic's right to exist instead of forcing their respective idealogies on everyone. Kara/Gilli/Mordred were on the better track because as direct victims, they were just fighting for their right to live. Both Merlin and Morgana's respective upbringing made them believe that they were monsters and that their abilites were to be feared. They were isolated from the people like them from a young age. It's even worse that they were both stuck with the most privileged positions in the whole kingdom. Merlin was technically an unofficial high advisor to royalty while Morgana had a claim to the throne. They used that to further their own agendas.
As I said, Merlin and Morgana's egos not only hurt themselves, their loved ones, but their entire struggle for freedom as well.
On aithusa (once more)
It's true then. Aithusa, the dragon was the omen that symbolize the future and the freedom of magic. She was crippled, weak and voiceless because the two people who took care of her and should have lead the fight for magic were out there trying to destroy each other instead of working together.
I love it.
