This one gave me a book hangover, I finished it a few days ago yet I keep thinking about the characters and the haunting actions of a few... I received an advanced reader copy of The Night Swim from St. Martin’s Press via NetGalley, in return for my honest opinion. The Night Swim by Megan Goldin is a story about long buried secrets coming back to haunt us. Rachel Krall is the host of a true crime podcast. This season Rachel has decided to cover a rape trial, in real time, in the small town of Neapolis. The victim is the teenage granddaughter of a previous police chief and the defendant is the star of the town, an Olympic hopeful swimmer- Scott Blair. Scott comes from one of the wealthier families in town and his family can pay top dollar for the best attorney. The plaintiff isn’t as lucky and due to stress and grief has withdrawn from society and most aspects of her life. While in Neapolis, Rachel receives letters asking her to look into the murder of Jenny Stills, which happened 25 years ago in Neapolis. Jenny, a strong swimmer, came from a very poor family and reportedly accidentally drowned. Rachel’s an outsider in this small town and is finding the wealthier families run Neapolis and that many prefer the past remain in the past. Will Rachel be able to uncover the truth behind Jenny’s death, before the verdict is in for Scott Blair’s trial? This was a great book that read like a true crime story at times and at other times like a suspenseful mystery. The author did a great job weaving the two storylines together, including a very surprising twist. The Night Swim is available today, Tuesday, August 4, 2020.
