The East Reach was no stranger to visits of royal caliber. The Elysian royal family visited their home throughout the years, often in the name of celebrations. But when an urgent announcement arrived, with the Desrochers’ seal imprinted in wax, Ainsley knew it was not in the name of camaraderie or celebration. Her suspicions were confirmed by the contents of the letter. It was written in the Queen’s hand herself, announcing her urgent visit to the East Reach. Although her letter contained little else, Ainsley knew the purpose of her visit; the startling shortage in crop and livestock shipped to the North. In the month following the attack on Glasswater Palace, the stall in shipments was inevitable. The growing need for security, the number of Elysian citizens displaced, and the rebel’s uprising made the transport of goods a difficult task. Not to mention, the growing pressure from the remains of the Stoneward house to localize their crop and ensure their stronghold. It was a difficult decision, but one that Ainsley felt was fair. The North was not the only trade partner struggling with rations.
Yet the sight of Queen Rosaline, in all of her pale beauty, forces the Lady Amaranthe to inhale a breath of confidence. In other settings, Ainsley would be brimming with confidence. She was well versed in politics, having handled her husband’s affairs throughout their marriage. But there was a reason for Rosaline’s reputation. She was a keen, logical, and strong leader. It was intimidating, yet Ainsley reminded herself of the facts; the mighty, Northern Queen rushed to the East Reach at a moment’s notice. She would not do so if she was not desperate.
“Your majesty,” Ainsley acknowledges, as the Queen is presented to the Duke of the East Reach’s study. She would walk closer, perhaps press a kiss on each cheek as she had at the masquerade ball. But the mood in the air suggested it unwise. “How was your journey? Would you like to rest before dinner?” In truth, she anticipated that her words were futile. But better she extend a gracious hand, than begin the conversation with harsh words.
