Honor Killings
The New York Times reported in an article, Con Man Claimed to ‘Cure’ Childless Women. Blackmail Followed, Then Bodies, that Mullah Rasool Landay has targeted the women of Afghanistan who have difficulty conceiving children. Landay claims that he has the “cure” to help these women. He lures these women into believing that if they have sex with him, they will conceive a child. In addition to conning women, he exploits his victims by having sex tapes made, and then made public on social medias. Landay is hiding from the authorities because there are recent reports of honor killings that may be linked to his crime.
According to Britannica.com, honor killing is “the murder of a woman or girl by male family members. The killers justify their actions by claiming that the victim has brought dishonor upon the family name or prestige.” In Afghanistan, honor killings are very common, and sometimes aren’t reported. For example, an article found on Amnesty.org, Brishna was raped by Mullah Mohammed Amin, in May 2014. According to the article, Women’s Rights in Afghanistan (Amnesty International 2014), Brishna’s male relatives threatened to kill her, and dump her body in a river because she brought dishonor to her family’s name. Although this report may not be linked to Mullah Landay, but Brishna’s story only validates that honor killings are highly common in Afghanistan.
