For many years between the wars and until his passing in 1950, Theodore Lamb led a reclusive existence in an old chicken coop. It was rumored that he witnessed his father's fatal accident, in which his father fell from a horse chestnut tree while collecting conkers for Theodore, resulting in a broken neck.

Another contributing factor to his withdrawal from society was purportedly being jilted at the altar by his beloved, an event that reportedly pushed him over the edge emotionally.

Despite his secluded lifestyle, Theodore was a skilled clock and watch repairer. He would traverse local villages, sometimes on a bicycle lacking tires, to mend timepieces and earn a modest income.

He would occasionally pose for photographs, charging a fee of half a crown (12.5p). Despite his frugal habits, he always paid his way.

However, when his attire, often fashioned from sacks, became too tattered, he was prohibited from entering Banbury, Oxfordshire, and had to wait for service outside the village shop.

Despite his eccentricities, Theodore was known for his honesty and harmless nature. He eventually succumbed to pneumonia at the age of 70 in Banbury Hospital. True to his character, he requested that his long, matted hair remain uncut, believing it would maintain his appearance.

A footnote to this: it was my grandad who found him unwell and got him to the hospital.
