Today we celebrate the Holy Hieromartyr Polycarp of Smyrna. Saint Polycarp was a disciple of Saint John the Evangelist and is considered one of the great early Church Fathers, writing various epistles, only one of which still survives today and is studied by Theologians all around the world. Saint Polycarp was enthroned as Bishop of Smyrna and guided his flock in prayer and humility until he was martyred by the pagan rulers. The pagans threw him into a fire which miraculously did him no harm, but soon after stabbed him to death.
