“I never thought she’d like me!” Eliza tells Angelica for the nineteenth time that morning.
“I know, Lizzie,” Angelica tells her, smiling as she fixes Eliza’s button-up shirt. It’s a little loose, a little too big for her, but it’s perfect and she looks good in it. “Just charm her, maybe get a kiss by the end of it. Make your lesbian sister proud.”
Eliza laughs and tilts her head, leaning in to hug Angelica. “I will, Angie.” She checks her phone and jumps a little on her feet. “Theo said she’s on her way to the coffee shop and then added a heart emoji! I gotta go!”
Eliza has her first date with her long-time crush, Theodosia. For my quasiplatonic partner’s birthday. Happy sixteen years of being alive, Saadia! <3
~ Alexander (Alex), Lafayette, John, and Hercules (Herc) are all in their own miniature “gang”
~ They’re all really well dressed (most of the time)
~ They’re all in seventh grade
~ Alex - 12; Lafayette - 13; John - 12; Hercules - 14
~ Herc convinced his parents to let him stay back a grade so he could be in the same classes as all of his friends
~ John buys candy cigarettes from the old man (Benjamin Franklin or Old Mister Ben) in the white ice-cream truck behind school that probably shouldn’t be there
~ Lafayette is obsessed with birds and his sketchbook is filled with drawings of many different species of birds
~ Alex convinced his adoptive parents (George and Martha Washington) to let him get his ears pierced and gets excited whenever Aaron buys him earrings

~ Alex is super confident and flirty but whenever he’s around Aaron he becomes all nervous and awkward and flustered

theo is definitely always getting her makeup on eliza. eliza pretends to be annoyed but theo can tell she isn’t and goes out of her way to kiss eliza on the lips or cheek just to get some lipstick on her and make eliza laugh
theo takes longer to get ready. mainly because she sleeps through alarms or does that “yeah i’ll get up in five minutes” things and then thirty minutes go by. it drives eliza crazy cause she hates being late to things
honestly neither of them can cook. their meals consist of microwaveable ones or going out for food. BUT at one point they start taking cooking lessons together and at first it is a disaster but both of them have fun and end up being pretty decent cooks
“23: The ceiling is leaking. Who wants to deal with the apartment manager?”
There is something near magical about pots and pans and assorted vases littering the house of a woman and her girlfriend. Something incredible, like succulents or cacti or elephant ears with Aqua Globes in painted vases so neither the woman nor her girlfriend have to spend time watering the plants each day. They can focus on more important, softer endeavors. Like, just for example, each other.
"The ceiling is leaking." Theodosia says. "There is water all over the damn place."
"It's cuddling weather." Eliza explains, then frowns at the look Theodosia gives her. "I can fix it."
"Eliza," Theodosia says slowly, holding her hands together as if in a silent prayer. "We have to call the apartment manager. She'll send someone out here to fix it, and we won't have to worry about paying-"
"I want to do it." Eliza interrupts, "I can do it."
She really can do it, and she is sure she can. Theodosia knows she can, too, but they should call the apartment manager.
They should, and yet...
"I'll get my toooool belt?" Eliza sings, and Theodosia is sold. "Fine." Theodosia says. "But I know you only have like three things in that belt."
Eliza laughs but doesn't retort. She hurries to their closet to gather things she thinks she will need. She pauses.
Eliza has fixed a lot of things. She has fixed the leg on Peggy's dresser, Angelica's toilet when Alexander flushed God-knows-what down it during a house party, Burr's wall behind his bed which looked as if he'd rammed the frame into the wall more than once, and she had even ace bandaged Thomas's wrist when he jumped the picket fence trying to impress some girls.
She has never fixed a roof or ceiling. She thinks it will be similar to Burr's wall and realizes that means she needs to go to the store. She and Theodosia are not broke, per say, but they definitely cannot afford all that roofing... drywall?
Eliza realizes she is not completely sure what the roof and ceiling are made of. Or how bad it is from outside.
But she has already told Theodosia she can do it.
She looks it up online, then decides that it is better to just call the apartment manager on account of she could accidentally make it worse. It would be bad if they'd be forced to fix it themselves.
She sighs, makes the call, then returns to Theodosia.
Theodosia notices her defeated look, but she smiles softly. "You called the manager, huh?"
"Yeah." Eliza says.
Theodosia takes Eliza's hand, then kisses her knuckles. "You can still wear the belt?" She offers.
Eliza chuckles. "Teddy.."
"Or... It's still cuddling weather." Theodosia says, shrugging, but she is grinning so wide, Eliza can't help but grin, too. "Even if our apartment looks like we're making a bunch of different kinds of soup."
Eliza laughs, warmer. She holds Theodosia, then kisses her head.
Theodosia cranes her neck, standing on her toes to kiss Eliza.
Eliza kisses her, then lifts her to spin. She laughs into the kisses, spinning her a moment then steps in a pot of water on the floor.
Theodosia just laughs, contagious, full of nothing but love. Eliza laughs, too.
