for the fic tropes! can you please grade fake/pretend relationship and friends to lovers?

fake/pretend relationship: A

this is like one of my favorite tropes ever. I love that it has the capacity to be absolutely hilarious or really heartbreaking and angsty. it’s so good when they’re both actively pining and battling the emotions of “omg this is what it would be like” and “IT’S NOT REAAAAL”. I also love when they don’t know and there’s the Oh. moment. I think it’s a great canvas for story building and so many different ways to do it. plus you get to see them build a certain relationship/dynamic as people planning out the whole “fake relationship” and then also see the ways they interact in whatever performance of said relationship and it’s just !!!!!!!!! beautiful !!!!!!!!

friends to lovers: C

I had a lot of trouble grading this according to the scale. because while it’s one of my favorite dynamics, it’s definitely something I’m not actively looking for in terms of filtering. as in, I think almost all ships I ship can fall into this trope and that’s without any real AU or canon divergence in place LOL

though rather than it as a specific trope, I prefer fics that build some level of friendship between the characters before they reach the lovers stage. kind of just across the board? I think it’s beautiful to see love form and the ways in which different authors will build that and how different characters interact with that.

that said!! if it’s like the main trope, I’m probably not super inclined to it? for me, I prefer stakes to be a little more than “it could ruin the friendship”. it would depend a lot on the overall context and plot and probably the ship. but I definitely don’t search for it. although that might then circle back to it basically being baked into majority of my ships. hudcon friends to lovers my beloved

anyways for lack of more succinct explaination: it’s a bit like… adding salt? I think a bit of salt makes a lot of foods taste better or some things just need salt in them, but I’m also not going to be eating salt all by itself. ….. probably.

3. favorite line/scene you wrote this year. RAHHH THE WORST QUESTION IN THE WORLD!!! okay ugh let me go trawl and see if i can find anything good. OKAY. alright. im gonna give you excerpts from the one and only hsmttstmstsgsdhs fic i wrote, because we have that in common and you may be the only person that's true for about me. on here. not sure if those words were in a cohesive order but WHATEVER. so here a couple favorite moments from i'm like you, but darker blue aka the rickygina s2 mommy issues fic:

“You know, my mom was the one who bought me my first skateboard.” Gina can see that being true, if only because Mr. Bowen doesn’t seem like a skater. Nor does he seem like someone who would impress skaterism upon his child. She doesn’t know much about Ricky’s mom; she might be a skater, like she might be a singer, or a lawyer, or an evil sea-witch. She’s whatever Ricky says she is. All Gina knows of Mrs. Bowen is the chalk outline of her absence. She recognizes the mom-shaped hole in Ricky’s life. It’s like looking in a mirror sometimes.

something about the phenomenon of "i don't know your mom so i can only know about her what you tell me" but also "i know about her because i know about you because i see you in a mirror" going hand in hand.

“Well, I can sit here and tell you you should call your mom and you’ll regret it if you don’t, or some bullshit like that,” Gina says, watching his lips barely twitch at the sound of bullshit, “or…we could watch a dumb show and not think about it.” It’s barely there, but even the small smile on his face is grateful. He looks over at her, wrapping himself tighter in the blanket. He would fit in her arms in this state, but that’s a dangerous thought to have. “That one, please,” he says. He drops his head. “I just… I wish I didn’t always have to be the grown-up, with my parents.” Gina raised herself on YouTube, on her own. She was doing laundry by age six and dishes by age nine. As much as she loves her mom—and she loves her mom, really—the things she learned from her were all tools for self-sufficiency. Honestly, she’d give anything for her mom to gift her a skateboard. She might even learn to ride it.

wanting the mom-shaped wound that the other person has......augghhhhhhh. she knows him like she knows herself I AM NORMAL. ABOUT IT.

“Okay, in a worst-case scenario, we might freeze. But I mean, realistically? This will blow over sooner than later, and we’ll all be out of here before you know it. You don’t need to…you just.” Gina clenches her jaw. So many things she wants to say, and most of them don’t make it past the “Hey Gina, Don’t Say That” filter in her brain that keeps her from saying the vast majority of things that would implode her few tenuous personal relationships. “I just?” “You don’t always have to be the solution,” Gina tells him. “You can’t fix everything, and you don’t have to. You’re not a Lightning McQueen Band-Aid, you’re a person.” He breathes out, a half-laugh. “Look, you want to be useful. You want to help. Trust me, I get the impulse. I’m just saying, you still matter even if you’re not the perfect solution to every problem.”

a veryvery important "character says what she herself needs to hear" moment. and it made me happy to include the callback to the lightning mcqueen bandaid from earlier in the fic :)

11. fandom you enjoyed writing for the most this year. interestinggg i think probably dimension 20?? i'm having a good time over in stranger things world but d20 there's just such a vast array of vibes to choose from and they are all great. also i just wrote a very high VOLUME of d20 fics this year.

30. favorite fandom to read fic from this year. for this i will say. though i read many a great d20 fic. i think the answer is stranger things, specifically because fanfic gives me what the show itself does and has not. in d20 i am generally pleased with how most stuff shakes out. this is not the case w stranger things, so reading fic has brought me more proportional joy i think because it patches that hole in my heart if you know what i mean
