The Orphanage (2007) Laura is a former attendee of an orphanage, when she grows older she and her husband buy it and turn it into their family home. When her son goes missing she discovers a dark and grisly past that she never knew existed. This film was great. From the start I was hooked. It’s a subtitled film, and the native language is Spanish, for someone that rarely indulges in subtitled films it didn’t make any difference and didn’t take anything away from the viewing experience. The story is fantastically paced and unfolds beautifully, it has different layers that interweave in a manner that reveals each one in a clean and concise manner as the film goes on. This is one of the things I loved, many horror films fall by the wayside because they’re over-complicated and leave too much to the imagination, and fail to explain what happened. This is the opposite! Atmospherically, it manages to stay consistently eerie, and doesn’t feel overdone or boring, it keeps itself at a steady level whilst adding high tension and suspense, it confidently stands out and delves deep into Laura’s psyche to create a unsettling but impressive atmosphere! Directed by Bayona with long time friend Guillermo Del Toro who is well known for being one of the masters of horror. They switch blood, guts and gore galore for suspense and a psychological vice to create a beautiful and vivid movie that ends just as well as it starts. The acting is great, and everyone who takes part in this fills their role superbly, this mixed with a brilliant story and a just as atmospheric soundtrack makes for a winning combination! It has its moments where you wonder how necessary some scenes are, and some minor characters could probably not have existed, but when they do, they don’t take away from the film, they just don’t particularly add to it either. But overall, this is a great horror, a psychological adventure of tense and suspense that isn’t to be missed.
