Chapter 2 Part 9 – Just keep running
I looked back at the giant rock-men. They were bigger than the last ones I saw and they did give me motivation to run. I saw that they were carrying big stones which they heated up until the point where they would nearly melt. Then they threw them at us. Shavua already changed back into his wolf form and helped everyone who was further behind. He gave Braid the order to protect me and bring me to the castle. The people and creatures around me looked at me desperately to help them and I tried, I tried thinking about destroying those rock-men, but it simply didn’t work. I kept running towards the castle which was a few miles away.
All of a sudden Braid pushed me hard to the floor and then threw himself next to me. A big rock flew past our heads and smashed into the ground shaking the earth around it. Braid helped me up again and we started running again. In the distance I could see that dark clothed person again. It looked more like the one out of my dreams which made me hesitant to continue my run for my life. I got slower as the figure started running towards me and Braid, who kept pushing me so we wouldn’t be crushed by the rock-men. “What are you doing we have to continue running.” He screamed at me and I pointed at the figure saying, “Don’t you see that thing over there. It is straight heading for us.” And it was, getting faster and faster with each step. “What are you talking about? There is nothing there.”
I looked at him surprised and then the figure was gone. I turned around to see if the rock-men were still after us and there stood the dark figure. Directly behind me as I turned. I made a jump backwards and tripped over a small dirt pile. The figure was floating in the air coming closer to me, breathing in my face and then it laid its hands around my throat and started squeezing. I tried kicking it off, but it was like I was kicking the air. Braid grabbed my shoulders and helped me up and just then the figure disappeared.
We started running again, but I had a lot of trouble breathing because of the choking that just happened. When I needed a rest I just stopped dead in my tracks and took a few breaths. Braid didn’t notice, but when he did he turned around. I could still see the panic in his face, but it surprised me that no ‘missiles’ were flying past our heads. There was silence all around us. No screaming, no explosions. Just absolute silence.
I turned around and the rock-men slowly fell apart. Those massive living structures first lost their limbs and then their heads. Until only dust remained. I saw the survivor behind us. Some of them were stuck under rocks, but those also vanished into thin air. Braid went straight to them to help them, while I still tried to catch my breath.
Braid called me over to help him and I walked over to the small family that needed our help. There was one son, a baby girl and their parents. The father was stuck under one of those rocks and was now bleeding heavily from his leg and arm. He probably was stuck with his right side under the rock since there were the obvious wounds. “Heal him, come on.” Braid said and I immediately tried. But nothing happened. It just didn’t work.

Chapter 2 Part 8 – Returning Hope
I knelt in front of the line between desert and woods and I then I thought returning that man back to his original state. I imagined, that the colour to his skin would return, just like you would see it in movies or on TV. I always thought that those people who died for others deserve the most respect. They are the true heroes in the stories.
I touched the figure in front of me and nothing happened. Braid quickly pulled my hand away once he noticed me touching the sand stature. Absolutely nothing happened. He didn’t turn back, but I didn’t turn into sand. “Don’t touch him or you’ll turn into sand” he said and I was surprised that I could understand him. “But I touched him and didn’t turn into sand. Look.” I showed him my hand, but he was more interested in what I was saying. “I can understand you.” He said and I nodded. “So can I.”
We heard gasping around us and then I looked at the sand stature. It was slowly turning back into the alpha. Just like I imagined. Why was my magic so suddenly back? The man fell on all four and got off the sand as quickly as he could. Braid helped him and once he was on forest ground again a water spring appeared from where he stood before. It quickly spread across the whole desert. All the statues turned back to their living form and then the spring started to dry out again.
Then a single blade of grass grew out of the spring and the whole desert began to look like a giant green field. You could hear birds chirp and water flow. Then the big sandy castle changed from a yellow to a white castle. It was on the top of a hill with lots of trees. All the creatures around the castle went towards it while I just stood there and was bewildered by the scenery. I didn’t know my magic could be that beautiful. I just turned a whole desert in a living and thriving biome.
“How did you do that?” Braid asked me and I just looked at him before the alpha guy said: “Because he is the saviour. My name is Shavua. I am deeply grateful for what you have done for me. I owe you my life.” “If I’m correct you saved me first so I guess we owe our lives each other.” He smiled and then turned to Braid “This is my son Braid, he will one day take over the lead of my pack.” “Yeah we already had the pleasure.”
Just then we heard grumbling from the mountains and with a big explosion the rocks flew in all kind of directions. They were burning hot and some small fragments hit the bystanders around us three. “Quickly, we have to get to the castle before the rock-men arrive.” “Did I mention? I’m not the best when it comes to running. Even if my legs are perfectly fine.” Everyone started running and Braid took my hand and said, “Don’t worry in a few seconds you will have enough motivation.

Chapter 2 Part 7 – The monster behind the mask
I looked at her shocked. She smiled like a baby that got candy. With a strong tuck she pulled me towards the sand and plucked a flower out of the grass beside us. Then just before we would step onto the sand she stopped and threw the flower in the sand. Now I know why she didn’t want us to step into the desert. The flower turned into sand itself and all that remained was a small pile of sand.
I wondered why she showed me this now. She could have shown us that before, than that alpha wolf dude wouldn’t have got that angry with her. I looked at her confused because it seemed like she wanted something from me. The old woman fiddled around with her arms, but nothing happened.
She quickly got angry and grabbed my shoulders tightly and started shaking me. I grunted in pain because she actually was hurting me. With a strong push I tried getting her off of me, but she had such a grip on me that her hands wouldn’t lose their hold of my shoulders. And then in front of me she started turning into a real hag. Her eyeballs ran out of their sockets and her skin turned a ugly black. The warts turned into spikes and she moved her hands from my shoulders onto my throat.
My immediate response trying to kick her and calling for help, but the kick failed because it went straight through her and the call failed because she was choking me with such a strength that I was scared I would die. It got to the point where I couldn’t see clearly anymore, but then it just stopped. Out of exhaustion I fell to the floor not knowing what was happening around me. I just heard a loud scream from that wicked witch and then silence.
After a few proper breaths my vision returned and started looking around. Everyone was staring at the desert. I turned my head and saw the alpha guy as a sand statue. The hag wasn’t here anymore. I looked around, but I couldn’t find her anywhere. The alpha guy must have saved me. In that moment I was more than shocked. That guy hated my guts and still he helped me. Then something different sparked in my mind. All those sand statues must have been people before. From the looks of it there must be at least a couple of hundred. The people and creatures around me began crying and wailing.
I hoped they wouldn’t start turning on me too. I would be dead within seconds. Instead though they all got on their knees and started mumbling words. I guess they were praying. But then something strange happened. It was like I was hearing them in my head. Different from what I was hearing around me. It actually made sense to. In a constant cycle they repeated the words:
“Saviour, we need your help. We are dying. Hear our calls.”
Then I listened to my surroundings again. I could understand them this time. To me they were actually talking in English. Maybe I finally got my magic back. It would make sense because I could understand DOLANGA on Earth where I had my magic. I walked towards the sand figurine and before I stepped onto the sand Braid pulled me back. Roughly I might add. A tear was running down his face. He then returned to praying, but he didn’t kneel on the floor.

Chapter 2 Part 6 – The sand hag
The longer we were walking the less worried I became and the calmer I got. What the hell was going on back there? Why was everything exploding and who was following us? It couldn’t have been the rock men, nor the wood man and the hunters weren’t able to blow something up with that effect were they? Those questions disappeared after a few miles and then I saw where all the sand was coming from. There was a desert. It wasn’t really big, because you could see trees surrounding the small desert. In the distance you could see a castle made out of sand, or it just looked like sand.
Around the castle were sand figures who looked like people. I wondered why they were there.
The alpha wolf, who now was a human again, tried stepping onto the sand, but when he did, sand was thrown into his face. There a few feet in the desert was standing and old woman. She looked incredibly old and ugly. I’m sorry, but she did. There was no beauty to her, only dry warts and old frizzy hair. She was wearing some rags that covered her entire body. The alpha wolf kept trying to get past her, but she kept throwing so much sand at him, that he couldn’t get past her. I found it quite amusing to be honest.
The alpha noticed me smiling and I guess he got angry with the women so he flashed her his wolf form and tried attacking her, but all she did was burying him in sand. The dwarves had to help him out of it. She laughed and giggled. They kept saying something to her, but she just giggled and laughed. When all the dwarves and wolves tried to stop her from doing anything else she created a wall made out of spikes. I guess the fun was over for her. She sat herself on top of one and looked down on us and started giggling again. What a bitch.
All the creatures and humans grew worried and started whispering to each other. I guess this was the only way they were getting into that castle and now it was blocked by an old hag. She watched us closely and saw the desperation in the eyes of the bird men, the humans, the wolves and the dwarves. No change to her funny state though. She kept giggling and said nothing.
The group decided to eat something while the hag wasn’t letting us through. Some of the humans were cooking up tee, while the wolves gathered some meat from deers for everyone. They started cooking it and then Braid came over to me and gave me some, while also giving me those herbs that helped with my wounds. After I ate I used them on the wounds and instantly felt better.
I then caught a glimpse of the hag looking down on the food and drinks, she was looking rather sad all of a sudden. There was plenty of deer, I had no idea where they got that many, so I decided to take some and walk towards the old woman. She saw me coming and lowered herself from her high position. She stood in front of me when I offered her some meat and she looked at me for a few seconds. She smiled and took it, lowering the spikes. I guess you have to be nice to enter this desert. Only makes sense. She looked at my wounds while she was eating the meat. Once she was done she grabbed my hands and after a few seconds she grabbed my arm. The wounds where completely gone. Even the pain and the numb feeling from the herbs.
Then all of a sudden her eyes widened. She looked at me like I was a ghost. “NAES.” She said and that grabbed the attention of everyone around us. How did she know my name that I didn’t use here? That I didn’t use anywhere.

Chapter 2 Part 5 – The desert in the woods
I stayed in the same spot as I was when I drew in the sand. It was actually a comfortable place. I was away from everyone else, but you still could see me from everywhere in the cave. Perfect for mister alpha wolf. I looked at my burns as they started to hurt again. They would take up a lot of time to heal and probably leave scars. Well, what should I say, I knew this wasn’t going to be easy. I saw everyone else was already asleep and the fire was slowly going out. I got up and walked to the wood pile and put some new logs onto the fire. I wasn’t alone though as I thought. The wolf I helped before was slowly creeping up to me. His paw nearly was healed completely. Only a little cut remained and the fur has to grow back, but apart from that he was fine. Can’t say the same thing about me. I walked back to my spot and sat down. I laid with my back against the wall and before I closed my eyes I saw the wolf laying down in front of me, so I wouldn’t be as alone I guess.
Through my dream I had a strange feeling. Someone was following me. I was running down some stairs and someone in a black coat ran after me. I got a few glances of the person and it looked like the figure I saw before I entered the hole. But this one wasn’t my grandpa. I felt scared. I knew there was a reason I was running from him, but I can’t remember what it was. The stairs didn’t seem to have an ending to them and there was no other way out of this place.
I was awoken by a stressed looking Braid. He put his finger to his lips signalling me to be quiet. Everyone else in the cave gathered and walked through a corridor in the wall. I heard screaming and grunting from outside of the cave. Braid helped me up and we went over to the others. All of us were walking through this small corridor and I didn’t like it one bit. It made me remember my dream and how I couldn’t escape the person, however Braid kept pushing me further down into the caves with everybody else in front of us.
Then there was a big bang behind us, which made the cave shake and everyone panicked. I tried taking a look behind me, but Braid just kept pushing. Another bang and everyone started running. The cave walls were crumbling and I was scared that they were breaking. Luckily the corridors end was near. Braid and I ran past three dwarves who were placing something in the walls. When we were all outside the dwarves were lighting a fuse and a few seconds later the cave was no more. No one was hurt, the other dwarves made it out alive just before the bombs exploded. That’s what they were placing in case you didn’t get that.
We were yet again surrounded by trees, but there were sand patches everywhere. We kept walking through the remaining forest. My heart was still beating like crazy and I got the feeling someone was watching me again. I turned my head and hoped I wasn’t in my dream and a man in a black coat would appear. Braid stopped me from looking around and directed me towards the others.

Chapter 2 Part 4 – First communication
The wolf and I waited for a while before the two of us got out of the tree. I took a second look at his leg. It was dark, but the moon was shining bright enough. It seemed to heal really quickly, but the wound wasn’t closed yet. Must be true what they say about werewolves. I wondered right then, why he didn’t change back to a human, and then I remembered the moon was shining. He probably wasn’t able to.
I wondered what next to do, but the wolf already took care of that. He nudged my hand and pointed with his snout into a direction. He started walking and so did I. While we were walking I tried looking for those herbs. And didn’t find any. They must have only grown in the other part of the forest.
The two of us came closer to a mountain range. In the distance I could see only a few possible ways, which lead over the mountains, but the wolf showed me something different. He nudged me towards a stone wall where many cracks garnished the face of the stone. He then crept closer to one of the cracks and disappeared behind the one. I walked after him and discovered a cave where fire was burning bright. The cave was lit up and I saw the many creatures from before. The birdmen, the dwarves, the wolves and the humans. They all stared at me when I entered the cave and the wolves immediately put themselves into my way, blocking me from walking further. Why were they so scared of me being around them? The wolf in front of me barked a few times. It wasn’t a real bark it was more like a really short high pitched howl. I don’t know. Something between the two.
One of the dwarves came to me and said something which I still couldn’t comprehend. How can I make them understand? There must be a way. “I’m sorry I don’t understand anything you say.” I said and the dwarf just looked at me puzzled. The wolves were still debating I guess and one of them scratched the floor which gave me an idea. I looked at the floor and it was not totally made out of rock. Some places had patches made out of sand. I walked to one of those places with the dwarf and started to draw a stickman into the sand. Then I drew an ear next to the head and wrote the word DOLANGA somewhere next to it. I crossed it out and let the dwarf look at it. He surely must be clever enough to understand it.
He called the one wolf over who seemed like the leader to me. It must have been that older looking guy, who debated with Braid. I wondered where he was. Both of the creatures looked at it and I guess they did understand because the dwarf brushed away my drawing and started his own. He just drew a castle and then motioned around him showing me he meant everyone in the room and then pointed again to the castle. I nodded, understanding that was where they were heading. I pointed at me and then made the sign with my fingers for walking and then I pointed at them. The dwarf looked at the wolf who clearly wasn’t happy with me being with them. The wolf then nodded and the dwarf smiled so I guess I at least could stay with them during the night.

Chapter 2 Part 3 – Not much time to stop
I looked around not knowing what else to do. Braid, if that is really his name, was looking around gathering some herbs. When he was done he came back over to me and grabbed my leg. At first he went full force, but after I flinched he was more careful. I looked at my leg and it probably just was sprained. It would hurt a lot more if it was broken, but nevertheless it would make walking and any other form of moving a bit more complicated.
Then he moved up to my arm and my hands. He rubbed some of the herbs onto the burns and the pain was quickly gone. Must be some sedative here. I made sure to remember that stuff. While he was doing that I saw wolves coming our way and I pointed that out to him by moving my hand their way. They all turned into humans, all six of them. He looked back at them while still rubbing some herbs onto me. The werewolves started talking to each other and Braid was quick to join them. What seemed like a field report turned into a quick argument though.
Braid and one older looking guy were a tad too aggressive to just talk and also it was clear in their voice that they weren’t happy. The older guy pointed towards me a few times and despite having no idea what they were talking about I kind of felt offended. I probably should have asked grandpa about a proper lesson in DOLANGA. Otherwise I wouldn’t be in this mess.
After their talk all of the man turned into wolves again and so did Braid. They all ran in the direction where Braid pointed before and then I was alone. Again. “Wait where are you going!” I called after them, but they just didn’t listen to me. Great, I thought to myself. They really left me all to myself. I decided to walk after them, in my snail tempo. Wherever they were going must have been a safe place.
I walked for an entire day and had no idea how far I got. This forest was stretching itself over miles. The sun was already setting again and I reached a small water stream and decided to drink from it. After all I was really thirsty. I still was wondering why those wolves decided to leave me. Maybe I wasn’t part of their rescue mission and they didn’t want to take any risk. Many Questions no answers.
I then heard a wolf howl and turned my head in that direction. I saw one only about a hundred feet away from me. With a closer look I saw that he was stuck on something and then I heard some laughing. Some men who had crossbows came nearer to that wolf. I quickly thought that I may have no chance against two men made of rock, but I would have a chance against three with crossbows. Well the odds were slightly better, but that was enough this time. So I ran as fast as I could towards the wolf and the men who noticed me of course started aiming at him.
They were clearly drunk, not only because of their behaviour, but also because they didn’t hit with one arrow. When I reached the wolf I saw he was inside of a bear trap. I used all my strength to open it and help the wolf move towards a safe space. Those hunter guys clearly were not able to do anything due to their lack of skills. We made it out of their view and hid in a big tree. That wasn’t my idea, by the way. The Wolf moved his head in the direction of the tree so I followed. I only could do all the running because of those herbs Braid put on my leg. I wondered if they were growing also in these parts of the woods. The poor wolf would need them. His right paw was bleeding really badly. It looked like it was severed, but then again the bone was still intact. I ripped some fabric off my shirt and put it around his leg. Why that idea didn’t struck me sooner when I was injured? I had no idea. The wolf was hesitant and careful when I touched him, but he still let me bandage his paw.
