Layer by layer, forgiving others, you really do get to the point where you can forgive yourself." I was very sad this morning to hear that the great Patty Duke passed away. At the age of 16 she won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her incredible performance as Helen Keller in The Miracle Worker. She and Anne Bancroft, who won Best Actress that year playing Keller's teacher Annie Sullivan, were a powerhouse ensemble. The bond they formed over the two years they had spent before doing The Miracle Worker as a play on Broadway translated effortlessly on screen. It's a beautiful film. I have posted here a picture of Duke with the real Helen Keller for my post. After she won an Oscar, she got her own sitcom, The Patty Duke Show, where she played BOTH of the show's main characters, Patty and Cathy Lane. At the time, she was the youngest person to win an Oscar in a competitive category, the youngest person to get top billing on Broadway and the youngest person on television to have a show named after them. As an adult, she continued to act but focused a lot of her time helping others as the President of the Screen Actors Guild and as a mental health advocate. I think she was a very strong and talented woman; and she was very brave to speak honestly and unapologetically about her battle with bipolar disorder because it helped others whose lives are touched by it. She will not be forgotten.
