With Thanksgiving dinner done, the world is now officially focused on Christmas for the next month—so here’s one of my all-time favorite holiday songs. Sure, the jokes didn’t age that well (you need to know your punk rock circa 1977 pretty well), but that riff is Grade A—so ebullient, so joyful, so wildly happy, which is what any holiday song should be. Also, dig that amazing William Stout cover, depicting Steve Jones, Peter Frampton, Mick Jagger, Freddie Mercury and Ray Davies up to no good. It ain’t the holiday season until this classic gets blasted, and we have now welcomed the holidays in our house.

Damn, I never get tired of this classic. No-hit wonders The Ravers released “Punk Rock Christmas” in 1978 and it holds up today because of that Keith Richards-quality riff. That awesome William Stout cover and red/green splatter vinyl don’t hurt either!

I love The Ravers’ “It’s Gonna Be A Punk Rock Christmas” for its gigantic, happy guitar riff; if its lyrics were less of the era, mentioning Farrah Fawcett and obscure acts like Eddie & The Hot Rods, perhaps this track could have become a standard in some corners of the world. This gorgeous Red/Green splatter vinyl was a 1978 Rhino Records rerelease of the 7” single that came out a year earlier on Zombie Records—Ariola’s short-lived punk label run by Scott Shannon, who went on to Z100/WPLJ radio fame. It was Zombie’s only release, which is a shame—that logo was awesome; some art director somewhere earned their pay on that one. Dig the cover by William Stout, too, who illustrated so many bootleg album covers. It depicts Mick Jagger, Peter Frampton, Ray Davies, Freddie Mercury and Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols up to no good; I thought Davies was Todd Rundgren until he set me straight on that via email. Anyway, Merry Christmas!
