not trying to be a hater or grammar police here, but i am genuinely curious as where the recent use of "cotton(ed) on" as a verb has come from. or more specifically why it's been adopted without any question. like i have never actually seen this phrase used until this last year, and i ignored it initially as a typo(its ao3. im not snobby about mistakes) which until i finally read it aloud and realized that the author likely meant "caught on"

i am genuinely curious by this, because i can see how this might be a quirk of an amateur writer whose first language is not english, but im confused why it's being used so often..

Imagine if there was a guy who went around like, school soccer matches and baseball games. And he recorded the kids falling over or making bad plays or dancing weird while waiting for their turn. And then he uploaded all the videos to his youtube with commentary over it like "this kid cannot play sport. Just look at how theyre playing." also the kid's name is on screen the whole time. And when people said its kind of fucked up to broadcast children being subpar at sports for your internet audience to rip apart the guy was like "well if they didnt want to be criticised they shouldn't have played in public. 🙄."

And then many years later he's completely turned his channel around and is making videos analysing professional games and sports history. If you didn't know any better he'd just be another sports commentator of a million. But you do know better and you remember he basically built his career on public humiliation of random kids. And this just never seems to be addressed? Man would that be fucked up or what

if dream eaters don't eat material food and generally prefer to speak psychically, what's the reason for them having mouths and teeth and tongues? i mean the honest answer is i want them to, but can i work an in-lore reason into the canon? aside from eating, what are those features for? communication can be one, like if you can't speak into something's brain then using mouth words can be a good backup. the buzzy space sounds they make could also possibly be made in their throat and can be modified depending on how they move their mouth? defense is another, dream eaters favor psychic damage but some things are resistant, and sometimes magic/psionics just isn't best in a situation. teeth and claws are for if something gets too close. another bonus - maybe not a primary feature but a bonus - could be using the mouth for physically manipulating or investigating things? dream eaters can't taste stuff but they can still feel, and if their hands are busy or can't reach what they're going for, yoink, grab it with their mouth then bring it to their hands to observe better. i've had this specific mental image of a younger zenith seeing a bird or butterfly or something flying around in a dream and him snapping it up so he can get a better look at it without all that flapping around. probably scared the dreamer with the sudden violent movement and teeth reveal and zenith just like what. what's wrong. i didn't bite YOU.
