Magic Is A Mind Game
Adam Gopnik as the author of the New Yorker article The Real Work suggests that there is a school of magicians believe the essence of magic lies not in the method, the trick, but in how it interacts with the minds of the audiences. As the quote he includes from the magician Jamy Ian Swiss, “it was that the trick was not the trick, and that it was the interchange between us that was the source of the effect” (Gopnik 9). Magic, in a sense, is “an experiment in empathy” (11) and what amazes the spectator is not how impossible the tricks seems, but the spark of conflicting thoughts between what they know and what they see when their minds could not stop trying to figure out how they are fooled by something looks so real.
Just like the example of the rivalry between Swiss and Blaine in the article, in the world of magic there are always the ones that are able to grasp the minds of the modern age, and the anti-magicians who refuse to simply follow the tradition. Magicians are all in this kind of love-hate relationship with each other. They admire each other’s work and congratulates their success, but at the same time that alter ego, that competitiveness, that self-evaluated expertise in the field also fills this little community with critics. As Gopnik puts, “The choice, in a sense, is between the real work and the real thing” (20). For Swiss, or Vernon, or Penn & Teller, magic is about the real work, the intense intellectual communication between minds. But what Blaine wants, is the real thing, is about how something that is intrinsically real can make people believe magic really exists. Which one is true? I do not know. What I do know is that kind of rivalry is what makes this art still magical.

Just over a year ago Amiri Baraka passed over into the realm of the Ancestors. He was an inspiration to me (and generations of writers of color) as a young, poet, philosopher and man trying to find his feet in blackness. Check this clip dug up from archives obscure. TURN UP THE SOUND! Baraka speaks prophecy concerning the REAL work of creatives of color and all colors. Rest in Power Leroi. Toward a People’s Future>>>>>>
