I am curious… What drives you to make art?⁣ ⁣ For me, I make art because it truly brings me so much joy. Once I get past the initial stages of insecurity (“What if I make a bad drawing?” “What if I disappoint myself and become discouraged?”), I am always amazed at how calm and meditative each drawing session can be, and that makes me so happy!⁣ ⁣ I also feel called to make art. It’s this inner nag that is always telling me to make stuff, like a craving or an itch that needs to be scratched… ⁣ ⁣ I feel like the world needs more art, more beautiful things, more self-expression… Especially when times are tough and things are scary. Art, in any of its forms, can be so comforting because it helps us relate to each other and the world around us in new and distinctive ways.⁣ ⁣ I love to make art and share it online because I always hope that it will inspire others to make art of their own and express themselves creatively in any way they can. We are all so unique yet so similar, and what we make always reflects this… I love to see all the different perspectives and ways of seeing that are out there in the world. Aaron Alexis (5/9/79-9/16/13) The Washington Navy Yard shooting occurred on 9/16/13, when a lone gunman fatally shot 12 people and injured 3 others in a mass shooting at the Washington Navy Yard in Southeast Washington, D.C. The attack began around 8:20 a.m. EDT and ended when Alexis was killed by police around 9:20 a.m. According to an FBI official after the shooting, Alexis was under the "belief that he was being controlled or influenced by extremely low frequency electromagnetic waves". A message later obtained by federal authorities from Alexis' personal computing devices said, "Ultra low frequency attack is what I've been subject to for the last 3 months. And to be perfectly honest, that is what has driven me to this." On 8/4/13, naval police were called to Alexis' hotel at Naval Station Newport and found that he had "taken apart his bed, believing someone was hiding under it, and observed that Alexis had taped a microphone to the ceiling to record the voices of people that were following him". On 8/23/13, Alexis showed up at a Providence, Rhode Island, VA emergency room complaining of insomnia, and he was prescribed 50 milligrams of Trazodone, a serotonin antagonist and reuptake inhibitor antidepressant. On 8/28, he sought treatment for insomnia in the emergency room of a VA medical center in Washington, D.C., where he told doctors he was not depressed and was not thinking of harming others. He was given 10 more tablets of Trazodone. Alexis arrived in the Washington, D.C., area on or around 8/25/13, and stayed at various hotels. At the time of the massacre, he had been staying with 5 other civilian contractors at a Residence Inn hotel in SW Washington D.C. since 9/7.
