research mode in the bunker wasn't that much different, in truth, than the research mode at home. only he had far more help here. Tim will admit that that was due to the fact that he didn't want help when he'd been at home. but here he was a little out of his depth when it came to trying to solve this puzzle. still something wasn't adding up in his mind. they had to be missing something. there had to be more to this whole thing. of course getting out of there was the best choice, who knows what would have happened if they'd stayed. but it seemed too easy.
talking to Sam enough left Tim with enough to know that this wasn't something that he was going to find the answer to in a random book. this was going to take a lot more just putting pieces together from different sources of information. luckily for them, they had a secret weapon. well Tim considered him a secret weapon. at least when it came to gathering information. it takes a few times of dropping the hint that Ben should ask Dean to teach him how to shoot a gun, the time comes that he can utilize the angel at their disposal to gather the information that he needed. luckily knowing exactly where Scarecrow likes to hide out comes in handy.
it takes weeks to piece it all together once he has everything that Crane was using to complete the ritual of opening the gate. his room looked like a bomb went off in it. his own notes strewn everywhere. he hasn't slept in two days but he was on a roll, he almost had it. it was on the tip of his tongue and he couldn't for the life of him spit it out. staring at the picture that Dean had sent Sam of the door itself, he needed to see it in person. it doesn't take any time at all to find Cas. pleading with the angel to take him to the gate, he knows that it wont react to him but it would give him the chance to examine it more closely.
"that's it..." he mutters to himself, fingers moving along the etchings in the stone. a near hysteric laugh leaves him. "that's it. i can close it!" the expression on Cas' face never changes but he can see the confusion in his eyes. "i have to write it down and then i'll explain." there was already a plan forming in his mind. he could do this. and Dean would have no choice but to go with it. he just needed to put it onto paper before he trusted his sleep addled mind to have come up with something that would work properly.
only after a two hour nap does Tim come running out of his room when he knows that Dean would be making breakfast and slams his hands on the table.
"i can close it."
