early influences on your writing
fuck um i… do not know. i’ve been reading since i was four, and reading fic since i was probably fourteen, but i didn’t write anything til i was 24, so. i dunno what counts as an early influence on my writing. all the fic i’ve read in the last decade and a half probably counts for early influences? i couldn’t pick specific authors. i don’t think my writing sounds like anyone i admire, namely because it’s. bad.
share the synopsis of a story you work on that you haven’t published yet
okay i can do two of these uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh The North Star Canon Divergence Fic We’ve Always Deserved But Never Got Until Now
writing advice
UM. I DUNNO. I DON’T KNOW HOW TO WRITE. I’M NOT GOOD AT IT. BE BETTER AT IT THAN ME AND YOU’RE FINE. or, well, actually, and i realize this is super trite but you gotta write for you, not for other people. and i don’t mean stuff like gift fic, that’s cool, writing for one or two people is cool, but there’s no point, to me, in writing something that you won’t be happy about just getting it out of your head? maybe it’s because i’ve only ever written for boardwalk after it was basically over where, like, ten likes and a reblog is IMPRESSIVE, but. yeah. i pretty much only write things i want written, mostly without considering whether The Fandom will be interested in it. so. do that?
i know it's not exactly a fandom but AUSTRALIA for the dash osmosis meme
omg. kaitie (and @therestisdetail). are you ready to hear what I’ve learned about your ABSOLUTE MEME of a continent/country
I know general human “I’ve lived on this earth and thus I’m aware of this” things, like where Australia is, and historically the Brits were like LET’S PUT THE TROUBLEMAKERS ON THIS ISLAND, which explains Dane, and in general American media is like “Australia, with the cute and cuddle koalas and kangaroos” but this is FALSE REPRESENTATION of your wildlife, which at some point went “fuck all y’all” and just went absolutely balls-to-the-wall out of its mind. which also explains Dane.
BEWARE OF BEING KING HIT BY DANE IN A BINTANG SINGLET. you have explained to me that king hitting was a cultural epidemic where people just went around punching each other in the back of the head. it was also a discovery to learn that when you say “singlet,” you mean this kind of shirt, as opposed to what Americans mean by singlet, which is this. learning that was kind of a game changer for this text post.
RECENTLY, while we’re on the subjects of Different Names For Things, it came to my attention that you call this a “slippery dip.” WHILE THAT IS AN ADORABLE NAME, it also … it just sounds too adorable and whimsical to be true. it’s like you and the guy who’s book I was copyediting are trying to pull a fast one on me
YOU HAVE A BIRD ATTACK SEASON, WHERE THE BIRDS ATTACK. THEY ATTACK FROM BENEATH, TOO, BECAUSE THEY’RE JUST SO ANGRY AND DETERMINED TO GET YOU.
when I was a little kid I used to watch The Most Extreme on Animal Planet all the time, and that’s how I learned about cone snails, which I still—to this day—come into my mind anytime I pick up a pretty shell, despite the fact that we don’t have cone snails here. yOU, HOWEVER, DO HAVE CONE SNAILS, WHICH HORRIFIES ME. I guess I didn’t learn this from my dash, but it clearly had a big impact on my life
Australia is a hard-drinkin’ country. My favorite demonstration of this was @therestisdetail very casually asking if our movie theaters were BYOB and kara and I were just like “……….THEY CHECK YOUR BAGS HERE TO MAKE SURE YOU’RE NOT BRINGING OUTSIDE SNACKS OR BEVERAGES INTO THE THEATRE” and georgie being like “so you can’t just…. bring your own alcohol to the movies?” (and along with that, it seems like you guys are. a little less authoritarian. apparently you’re allowed to like….. go outside during the school day? they let you leave the building?? THEY DON’T LOCK YOU INSIDE??)
You guys are encouraged to vote and it’s super chill
You’re divided into……. sixths (sixths, right?). But also like. Everybody lives in a few parts of Australia and then the rest is THE ABYSS
Kangaroos have banded together to form street gangs and they will mug you or pick fights
but THE MOST IMPORTANT AND TRUEST FACT THAT I HAVE LEARNED ABOUT AUSTRALIA: it has some of my favorite people in it and also is too far away from my loving embrace 💜💜
send me a fandom (OR A COUNTRY, I GUESS) I’m not in and I’ll tell you what I’ve learned via dash osmosis

apple slices are like the classic thing right with cheese tastings and stuff. apple or pear to clear the palate or whatevs
admittedly my only experience with cheese tastings is in restaurants and stuff but they definitely usually provide some kind of fruit puree or something around here. i shove whole apple hunks in my face at home because #classy, but also it’s... better if you have gastro issues to have something to offset the cheese /gross
