- Paul n Gary n Brock — Paul is doing his Kanto run n somehow Gary n him end up “””making friends””” (read: Paul thinks it’s more efficient to get a ride from Gary and Gary likes having a badass w him) n both identify w Brock’s family issues so they help him out. Ironically they try to get along better so Brock feels less like he has to baby them

- misty n Lillie — post game Lillie instead of anime Lillie bc timeline is w/e. Lillie takes sympathy on Misty’s self esteem issues. They help each other become more confident

- may n Serena n Tracey — May leaves home to avoid having to take her journey seriously and ends up in kalos. After meeting up with Serena, who is also trying to avoid responsibilities, they end up basically backpacking across kalos, where they meet Tracey and befriend him after may convinced him to let her and Serena’s team be his muses.

- max n kiawe — kiawe finally gets the money to travel to study dance. Phoebe has agreed to teach him and his marowak a special dance if he can collect all the badges. On the way, Norman only agrees to challenge kiawe if he can make his son stop mopping, since max is jealous that May is traveling. Kiawe ends up letting max continue traveling w him bc he misses his younger sister and looking after others is nice.

- dawn n Alain — at first, they meet by battling over lopunnite. Dawn actually tried to warn Alain against hanging around lysandre, since she catches the same vibes from him that she caught from Cyrus.

- mairin n iris n clemont n Bonnie — iris is traveling to find more dragons & rescues mairin from some bullshit. Bonnie n iris get along so clemont decides to travel w the two so Bonnie can hang w them.

- mallow n Lana n Sophocles n cilan — mallow n lana n Sophocles originally decided to make a trip to Hoenn to visit kiawe, but the plane had a delayed layover in unova. Cilan recognizes mallow and offers them a place to stay for the night; during he evening there, the group decide they’d actually like to travel through kalos, especially since kiawe now has company in hoenn. Cilan comes along with them since he and mallow have a rivalry going
