I don’t think people appreciate how much of a father and mother figure Aspen and Lucy respectively were for the Schreave kids. They tried to have their own kids so desperately and yes, a part of them was wounded because they never got a chance to experience parenthood the way they always thought they would, but the Schreaves were never going to be a nuclear family. A part of America would always love Aspen because he was her first love and one of her closest friends and Lucy and America became close friends and practically sisters as the years went on along with Aspen and Maxon as brothers. So when America and Maxon started having their own kids and their responsibilities took up time who do you think they had look over their kids? Yes, Maxmerica was there during Eadlyn’s first steps but Aspen was the one who taught her how to tie her shoes. America would sit and guide five year old Kaden’s hands along piano keys but when a important meeting called her and Maxon away late into the day Lucy was the one who sat down with him and helped him sound out the words in his kindergarten books. The Legers love the Schreave kids unconditionally because, in one way or another, those kids were something they never thought they would have, even if they don’t realize it.
