Hooray for the seniors! Completing a thesis at Reed is an incredible accomplishment, especially under the circumstances of this past year. Though we cannot gather outside of the registrar's office as usual, please enjoy a digital thesis board honoring the class of 2021.

#TBT: Michelle Lopez ’09 shares a cookie recipe that brought back Reed memories of thesis parade. She is the baker and photographer behind Hummingbird High, a mouth-watering food blog. 

“I took a bite. And immediately, I was transported back to college. There was something about the champagne flavor — maybe the fact that I’d only shelled out for a $7.99 bottle, or maybe it was when combined with all that sugar, I really don’t know — that reminded me of my college’s Thesis Parade, the starting event of an annual end-of-the-year college party that kicks off by burning the theses of the graduating seniors while dousing them in bottles of Andre’s. It wasn’t a bad flavor necessarily. Probably not to anybody who didn’t attend Reed College. But to me it just tasted like regret, unrequited love, and underaged drinking.”

The culmination of four years and a lot of focused work for another cohort of Reed College seniors. Congratulations Class of 2016!

Really debating on going to Thesis Parade tomorrow. Because on the one hand, I now have some experience in kissing two other people. On the other, I will probably really anxious and stand around awkwardly (like Freshman Year) and I also won’t be inebriated and I’m worried that I’ll smell like champagne for the rest of the day, which is not exactly a good smell, and AAAHHHH.

Following Thesis Parade, there is an unexplained increase in oral herpes outbreaks, mononucleosis infections, and various saliva-transmitted illnesses.  This unexplained correlation has perplexed Reedies for over a century.

Unlike most colleges that allow their seniors to wind-down while planning to enter the real world, Reed feels it is of the utmost importance that their seniors be under more stress than they have ever experienced in their lives.  To prevent this from keeping future students away, graduating seniors are given a hat (often referred to as 'laurels') laced with a chemical to help them forget the horrors of the past year, similar to the beta-endorphins that allow mothers to forget the pain of childbirth.
