Thank you so much @thesteamgoth for the tag!
1. What is the working title of your book?
2. Where did the idea for your book come from?
A lot of things, but the first idea was just the setting. A lot of the inspiration for the rest of the world came from my love of mythology and ancient history. The characters just kind of showed up one day, but I love them all so much and I’m so thrilled that I get to tell this story.
3. What genre is your current work in progress?
4. Choose the actors for your movie rendition.
Uh I don’t really know. I’m not a huge movie person, so I really don’t have any idea. I would just want all the characters of color to stay that way and for Siora to stay a fat girl.
5. Give a one-sentence synopsis of your book.
War is on the horizon and Siora Veris’ only hope to stop it and redeem herself rests with a group of fools brave enough to attempt regicide.
6. Will your book be self-published or represented by an agent?
My hope is to go the traditional publishing route! I’m working on my query letter right now and I hope to take TSC to the query trenches by early September.
7. How long did it take you to write the first draft?
I started the first draft in November of last year, but I was still outlining then. I started drafting in earnest in December and finished in early February. So about 3-4 months?
8. What other books would you compare your story to?
In my mind it’s similar to Shadow And Bone by Leigh Bardugo. It’s a YA fantasy set in a non-medieval world with a quest-y/grand adventure sort of vibe. Even if it isn’t exactly similar, I think it works well as a “will appeal to readers of.” But I might be wrong.
9. Who or what inspired you to write the book?
I’ve had a lot of writing inspiration throughout my life, but the direct inspiration from this one was actually Leigh Bardugo! I was working on the world building when I went to go see her Wonder Woman: Warbringer opening in August of last year. I asked her if she had any tips on world building and she asked if I was the make-it-up-as-you-go-along type of world builder (a Martin) or the spend-years-constructing-languages type. (a Tolkien.) I told her I was a Tolkien and she said “stop worrying about the world and just start drafting.” And the next day I did. (I realized afterwards that I had to scrap it and start over with an outline, but still.)
10. What else about your book might peak reader’s interest?
There’s a main f/f couple, an nb character, literally all of the MCs are queer and there is 0 Fantasy Homophobia. There are a lot of themes focusing on different kinds of love and found family, as well as dealing with grief/loss and healing from abuse. Also: regicide, what’s not to love?
I tag @sleepy-and-anxious, @romanthewriter, @starsandsquids, and @violet-clouds-and-skies! (No pressure if you don’t want to do it!)
