So Ava was always a good student and person like she never talked back and was always punctual

She did a bunch of extracurriculars and tutoring (and she was in a band with her friends, she plays guitar 🥰)

She was in accelerated classes all through school and was planning on graduating early so she could perfect her application essays and entrance exams for med school

But then in the first quarter of her senior year her parents suddenly announced they were moving to the USA

Ava’s mum had gotten a job working for Cornelius Rhodes and it was an offer they couldn’t pass up :/

Ava hated this because it meant she would have to redo senior year because her graduation wouldn’t be for another few months and her parents wouldn’t let her stay in South Africa

Also American med school is so different so it would put her about five years back in terms of training and stuff :/

So it felt like her parents were throwing away her future and all she’d worked specifically for for the past 4+ years

She was pissed and hated that she had to leave her friends and her band and all her plans for the future behind

So she rebelled

And now she makes it her goal to piss off her parents <3

Which includes being disruptive in class, getting into things she shouldn’t, making out with girls in the school hallway (her parents “don’t support this gay phase”), swearing at teachers, etc

She still does all her school work and gets good grades but she’s also a little shit 😌🌸

Her partners in gay crime include April and Crockett, who are also pretty well known for being “bad” (they just like to test the boundaries but yknow teachers hate that) and April’s girlfriend Sarah <3

(Sarah’s not one for being too rebellious but she goes wherever April and Crockett do and her and Ava get along well!!)

So one day Ava gets in Deep Shit and has to decide between one month of detention or community service within the school

Not wanting to lose her freedom too much she begrudgingly chooses the community service, which happens to be working with the drama club for their semester production

Robin is the school’s resident actress basically

Y’know that one theatre kid who did years of musicals and plays in every local company and school program imaginable and has written her own screenplays and seen Broadway shows a billion times?

Yeah that’s Robin

She’s not stuck up like those kids stereotypically are though, she’s actually a sweetheart but anyway

Her best friends are Connor and Sam !! They’ve acted together in a lot of shows and have been friends since elementary school

So Robin’s the star of this production and the co-director

And she’s hell bent on making it her best performance yet because it’s her senior one and she knows reps from universities and agencies will be there

She hopes to get a (very deserved) scholarship from her dream arts university <3

So when her teacher brings in the South African transfer student who’s nothing but trouble and says she’ll be working with them for the semester

Ava notices immediately and she decides, like the lesbian gremlin she is, to pester her especially

There’s no way she’s letting Ava ruin her big show so she’s >:((( at first

But Ava is really charming and her laugh is cute and Robin can’t help but find it kind of endearing that she starts immediately coming over to her during rehearsals to see how she can help

Because she could go to the teacher, the other director, who is supervising her community service

But she decides to ask Robin instead <3

But also there’s tension between Connor and Ava because her mum works for his dad and she hates that because that’s why she’s here

And Robin’s friends don’t trust Ava

So everyone is very wary about each other for a while

And yeah this AU follows that 😌🌸

what do you think ava would be like drunk (for science)

Hmm I feel like she probably has a high tolerance but I imagine she’s a lot more relaxed when she’s drunk. Like she lets her guard down and gets along with people better and is more friendly/approachable? Ava isn’t one to dance at a party or anything unless she’s had a couple drinks I think

It would be very cute if she was a giggly drunk too though, imagine Ava laughing at something with her whole body (like Norma does 🥺) and she’s just so carefree and it’s nice to see the work-oriented surgeon relax a bit

The real question is does she become more confident when drunk? Like shamelessly flirting with Sarah confident because she likes to see her blush or starting lighthearted arguements with Sam and Connor about who’s the better surgeon gsjskd

Okay. In canon, how do you think Ava would feel about people calling her by her first name? Would she just be okay with it, would she secretly prefer it Bc people forget she’s human, would she shut them down? I can’t figure it out - (this is mostly for canon but I mean could be a cool thought exercise for ur aus too) - <3

Interesting question. In canon I think it depends who she’s talking to. Like Connor calls her Ava and she never protested and she even introduced herself to him as Ava. But then you have Ethan who she wasn’t nice to in the beginning still calling her Ethan and she doesn’t seem upset by it? Which is odd if she’s so serious about residents knowing their place in the hierarchy

I feel like she’s used to people calling her Doctor Bekker because like... in Chicago that’s how people know her. I would like to say she prefers to be called Doctor Bekker by people she doesn’t know well or other doctors who may be higher up than her because it holds the level of respect she deserves. Though I definitely agree that with people who she wants to be friendly with she might prefer to be called Ava because it makes her feel like a person. She was such a plot device that we didn’t get to see much of her interactions with others, but like the way she interacted with april/nat/sarah in 3x18 specifically it just seems weird if they would have called her Doctor Bekker in a casual situation.

In front of patients and at the gala and stuff I’m sure she’d want that level of respect from the other doctors/staff but at things like Nat and Will’s bachelor(ette) party I think she probably would have insisted upon a first name basis for comfort’s sake. So maybe it would depend on the scenerio? I feel like it would be weird for her since everyone kinda sees her as an unfeeling surgeon who is identifiable only by her title; kinda like how they never call Latham by his first name? But I don’t think she enjoys it all too much because she doesn’t have anyone that close to her in Chicago so she feels like she’s merely just another colleague and Doctor rather than a possible friend, which would add to the theory of her discomfort/anxiety/loneliness with moving to Chicago

Headcanon that Ava is addicted to energy drinks even though she knows it’s horrible for her heart

Ava was really quiet and non-confrontational in med school but became the No Shit Taken competitive surgeon she is as a resident out of necessity

Would love to see some flashbacks of what her life/work was like back in South Africa and like how that shaped her into the person/surgeon she is

Accent... good

She may seem pretty depersonalized from patients’ pain and situations but it always hits her really hard if she loses a patient or they have a bad story/outcome

She especially cannot handle cases with sick kids it just breaks her heart which is why she tries so hard to fight for and save children especially

Natalie and Ava actually became close friends and no one else knows but they hang out a lot outside work

Owen loves Ava and she’s definitely one of his favourites of all Nat’s friends

Ava is definitely more of a cat person than a dog person

She used to do martial arts from childhood to med school

Cuz I just think Ava fighting would be really hot?? I’m gay

She loves going to the beach

She never really had a back up plan but if she had to choose another career she would have gone into general surgery or paediatric surgery

I would like to read something like Sarah having a breakdown about her dad and Charles and all that (so set before she runs away) and ava is the one who finds her and is so confused but tries her best to calm her down

She just seems really level headed under pressure or if someone else is upset so I think she’s very good at comforting people

Like when she comforted Nat about Owen or the few times she helped Connor calm down from bad outcomes and stuff

Ava and Robin would have been good friends if the love triangle wasn’t there and I think them bullying Connor would have been hilarious

As a teenager she dyed her hair a lot and always had some bright coloured streaks or something

Has definitely thought about doing it again but thought it would be weird as such a well renound surgeon
