The Three Degrees, vaandeldragers van de Philadelphia soul, vieren dat zij 60 jaar in het vak zitten, en doen dat deze maand in het poppodium van Cpunt in Hoofddorp. Verder bezoeken de dames in Nederland alleen nog Uden, dus voor alle fans van nummers als 'Dirty Ol' Man' en 'When Will I See You Again', is dit - misschien wel - de laatste kans. The Three Degrees zijn de langst bestaande vrouwelijke zanggroep in de geschiedenis en ze zijn niet van plan het rustiger aan te doen. Met origineel lid Valerie Holiday, vergezeld door Freddie Pool en Tabitha King viert de groep in 2023 hun zestigste jaar in de showbusiness. Vanaf de oprichting in 1963 speelde de groep in wisselende samenstellingen, maar altijd als trio. In Nederland behaalde de zanggroep haar grootste successen tussen 1973 en 1979. Het trio heeft haar roots in Philadelphia, bakermat van de 'Philadelphia soul' of 'Phillysound'; soulmuziek met funk- en jazzinvloeden en rijk aangezette strijkers- en blazersarrangementen. Het genre markeerde de overgang van traditionele r&b naar disco. Koning Charles III, toen nog prins, riep The Three Degrees publiekelijk uit tot zijn favoriete muziekgroep en nodigde ze uit voor zijn huwelijk met Diana. Het leverde de band de bijnaam 'Charlie’s Angels'op. Zes decennia later bezit het drietal nog steeds dezelfde gouden zangkwaliteiten waarmee zij dit koninklijk keurmerk verdienden. スリー・ディグリーズの "When Will I See You Again"。邦題は「天使の囁き」。女性3人によるコーラスグループの楽曲である。軽快なラブソングで、どこかモータウン・サウンドの影響を感じさせる。

歌詞は、ほぼ全て疑問文だけで構成されているという珍しい曲である。サビの部分ですら疑問文。ただ、この疑問文は、相手への問いかけかというとそうではなく、自問のようになっている。もっと言えば、願望や妄想。昭和の青春ドラマの１場面のようでもある。メルヘンチックで夢見る米国少女が想像される美しい曲でもある。

このスリー・ディグリーズが来年2023年2月に来日公演を開催するそうだ。このグループが、未だに現役で活動しているとは思わなかった。この曲の年代以降、スリー・ディグリーズの話題をほとんど聞いたことがなかった。調べてみると、メンバー・チェンジも多く、元メンバーは15人にも達するという。日本のAKB系のように、卒業しながら新たなメンバーが加入るという新陳代謝を繰り返してグループが存続していく手法の原点を見たような気がした。ただ、今回の来日メンバーには初期のメンバーも入っているようで、グループとしてのコンセプトは失われていないだろう。ただ、最近のライブにおいては、歌唱力の衰えは隠しようもない。

興味深いところでは、米国出身のコーラス・グループでありながら、ライブの英国と日本に集中している点である。過去に何度も来日公演を行っている。そういえば当時、どこかのラジオ番組で、スリー・ディグリーズは日本と英国で特に人気が高いと言った話を聞いたことがあった。そういえば、昨年アルバムを発表したABBAも英國や日本での人気が高い。ひょっとして、米国人はコーラス・グループがあまり好きではないのかもしれない。最大のマーケットなのに。
