Donald Byrd – Places and Spaces
Places and Spaces is an album by American trumpeter Donald Byrd, that was released on Blue Note in 1975. Allmusic awarded the album four stars and reviewer Stephen Thomas Erlewine wrote that there isn’t much of interest on Places and Spaces for jazz purists, but the album would appeal to most fans of Philly soul, lite funk, and proto-disco.
After listening to Bowie’s Young Americans I did some poking around online to learn more about Philadelphia Soul, which led me inevitably back to Teddy Pendergrass. I got this record for $2 from Other Music in NYC on my honeymoon eleven years ago (my husband was and continues to be very patient with me). But I didn’t super connect with it at the time. I listened more to its immediate predecessor, TP. It hit me a lot better today after listening to Philly Soul playlists online, think I’m ready to dive into it (and many similar records) now! Got any records that you kept around just waiting for the right time to get into them? #teddypendergrass #phillysoul #philadelphiasoul #vinyl #vinyladay #lp #vinyloftheday #vinyligclub #vinyljunkie #vinylcommunity #vinylcollective #instavinyl #vinylgram #recordcollector #nowspinning https://www.instagram.com/p/CcXtad2uO4i/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
In 2018, we did a story in PSN about this album. Found by archivist college students in the tape library of a now-defunct Philadelphia studio, it is the “lost” debut album of an equally lost R&B vocal act, Nat Turner Rebellion. Recorded in 1969 and never released, it is a time capsule of classic Philly soul music, going the full range from political stompers to classic courtship pop to slow laments over the state of society. Once those students gave it a listen, they realized they’d struck gold. It was released at the time on VMN and sold out in a heartbeat, so I quick grabbed a rerelease on Record Store Day #1 last month.
